Introduces the characters, setting, main conflict of the story Rising Action Builds up the level of suspense with minor events leading up to the major conflict Climax When the conflict reaches its highest point. The protagonist comes face to face with their problem. Falling Action Tying up all loose ends Resolution How the story comes to a reasonable ending.

Irony: When the opposite of what you expect to happen, happens. “Hop-Frog”- The jester, who is supposed to make the king laugh, kills him “The Lottery”- The person who wins the lottery, dies (lotteries are usually something good) Foreshadowing: Hints of what is to come later in the story “The Lottery”- The children collecting stones at the beginning of the story Signs- the water glasses left all over the house- water killed the aliens Point-of View: the perspective in which a story is being told “The Cask…”- 1st person, unreliable- the narrator cannot be trusted Imagery: Using words to create a mental picture within a story “Hop-Frog”- The description of the burned bodies “The Cask…”- The description of Fortunado’s clothes and the tinkling of the bells Setting: time, place, weather “The Lottery”- sunny, summer day in a small village “The Cask…” During Carnival, loud music and drunkenness.
