April - May 2015 Reception Week 2: A letter from Farmer Giles Mon 20 th -24 th April The children receive a letter from Farmer Giles (from ‘What the ladybird heard’, who needs their help! Some of the animals from his farm have been stolen by Lanky-Len and Hefty Hugh – can the children use their maths skills to help him figure out who is missing? There will be a focus on maths word problems this week and what operations we use to solve them – halving, addition, subtraction, doubling etc They will also be writing instructions about how to keep the farm safe. (M-N/L-W, PD-H&SC) Week 1: Farm yard hullabaloo Mon 13th- 17 th April On the first day back at school the children will be met by a mini farm of animals. They will begin to find out about how some of the animals live and how they are looked after. We will be learning to identify and classify a variety of common animals, discussing how they change over time and what they need to survive. We will also be learning about the names for the different groups of animals (gaggle of geese etc) We will be doing a maths investigation about what our favourite farm animal is and thinking about different ways to show this in maths. (M-SSM/UW-TW/NC Sc Yr.1) Week 5: Oliver’s vegetables - Mon 11th-Fri 15 th May Using the key text ‘Oliver’s vegetables’ we will start to explore more about healthy varieties of food. We will learn about the different food groups and how important it is to eat a range of food. We will be doing some food tasting together and learning new words to discuss flavours (sweet, sour, bitter etc) We will focus our maths learning on money in preparation for our ‘farmer’s market’ next week! (M-SSM/N, PD-H&SC) Week 3: Food for thought… Mon 27 th – Fri 1 st May In groups this week the children will be learning all about different types of farming – crop and livestock. In groups they will be learning about the difference between these things by researching on the internet they will be visited by a Dairy farmer who will tell them all about the different things we make from milk! The children will start to learn about where their food comes from – animal or crop? Week 4: Frog Belly Rat Bone - Seed to plate Mon 4 th – Fri 8 th May This week the children will read the story of Frog Belly Rat Bone. In the book, they will find a letter from the boy who asks them to find out what the specks are. The children will spend some time thinking about what they may turn into and writing about their predictions. We will be visited by some parents who are keen gardeners to help us to plant our specks and see what might happen to them! END OF TERM – FRI 22 nd MAY – Farmer’s market/ Parent’s welcome from 2-3pm – Dress up as farmers! Week 6: Farmer’s market Mon 18 th – Fri 22 nd May This week we will be getting our farmer’s market ready for opening! We will be writing recipes to sell, creating posters designing fruit smoothies, ice lollies, vegetable packs to make soup etc We will be pricing these up and preparing for the big day! Thurs 23 rd April – St George’s Day assembly
