MidCont2013

Field Data Collection  What is Asset Management from a maintenance perspective?  How do we collect and manage information about our features?  Where does technology fit into the picture? 2

MidCont2013 Field Collection Pilot 1 & 2  District 2 (NE Iowa) wanted a way to use technology do to culvert inspections  We looked at technology options for field data collection (tablet, handheld GPS, android/blackberry phones)  We looked for COTS application solutions  Ask for funds to try something new – received two years of SPR research funds 3

MidCont2013 Tablet Criteria  Good screen visibility in outdoor situations,  Tablet form-factor in the 7” – 11” size range gives optimal trade-off of screen size and portability  Reasonable first cost and life-cycle cost  Compatible with the major operating system platforms (iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry)  Compatible with our mobile device management policy  GPS enabled without a network connection  Built in camera and microphone  Touch enabled  Long battery life (min. 6 hours)  Wi-Fi enabled and/or mobile broadband enabled 4

MidCont20135 Easy to work with in the field - built in camera and GPS Zeroing in on the right hardware for the job

MidCont2013 Testing Tablets  Devices evaluated in our research include:  Panasonic Toughpad A1  Apple iPad2 & iPad4  Asus TF700  Motorola Xoom  GD Itronix GD3080 Rugged Tablet PC  Trimble GeoXT Handheld GPS  Blackberry Torch  Trimble Yuma  Juniper System Mesa  xplore iX104C5 DMSR  7” SOL tablet PC  Fujitsu Q702  Lenovo Ideapad  We are deploying the Apple iPad 4, but found the ASUS TF700 to be a good alternative 6

MidCont2013 What We Built  Used Tablet (Android, Windows and Apple)  Prototype is Android based – however is in Adobe Air so runs on Windows & iOS  Customized Transcend MAVRIC (COTS) app  Field Inventory and Inspection Capabilities – Culverts, Signs, Guardrail, and Incidents 7

MidCont2013 Test Data Collection  Culvert Inventory and Inspection  Sign Inventory and Inspection – Currently have a different system that runs on a laptop with a GPS puck  Guardrail Inventory and Inspection  Incident Management – Need to develop a workflow management system for field issues 8

MidCont20139

Ability to preload data and run the system disconnected. Collect inventory data once and use it over and over in this and other applications. 10

MidCont2013 Pictures of system 12 Inventory Screens – All button have preloaded lists

MidCont201313 Inspection Screens

MidCont201314 Attachment Screen – Because a photo says a lot. Video and audio can also be recorded and stored with each record. All data is synchronized to a centralized database.

MidCont2013 s 17 Collect incidents as well as assets, attributes bars below can be customized

MidCont2013 Where do we go from here? Online Query from data collected in field

MidCont2013 Trials and Tribulations  Procuring a contract – Non-IT, hardware, software ‘purchase’, but a research project  Issues with weather, scheduling, field testing  Issues with IT support in house (data modeling, development)  Bleeding edge technology so learning as we go 19

MidCont2013 Next Steps and Lessons Learned  Everything always takes longer than expected  Not everything works as expected especially during field tests  For workflow changes statewide buy-in is important  Always have a “plan b” 20

MidCont2013 The Politics of Hardware/Software  What can we use the tablets for in the field?  How do we handle device management?  What timeline makes the most sense for deployment?  Do we build a production app or use a fee for service application? 21

MidCont2013 Moving Forward  Deploying 120 iPad with ruggedized cases and clamshell keyboards  Road condition reporting through the winter months  Asset condition reporting  Testing several software options 22

MidCont201323

MidCont2013 QUESTIONS? Thank you! Shawn Blaesing-Thompson Maintenance GIS Coordinator Shawn.blaesing-thompson@dotShawn.blaesing-thompson@dot.iowa.goviowa.gov 515-239-1805 Matt Haubrich Asset Manager Matthew.haubrich@dot.iowa.gov 515-233-7902 24

MidCont2013 What is Asset Management?  Infrastructure Based Assets – Things you can see and touch in the field (roads, signs, bridges, etc.).  Things that can impact the safety of the traveling public.  Data collected about those features – design data, GPS data, business data such as physical attributes, condition, etc. 25

MidCont2013 Demo  What is in the field now – Panasonic Toughpads, ASUS Android Tablets, Motorola Xoom, and several Ipad 4 th Gen  2 months into field testing 26

MidCont2013 How can GIS benefit how you do business? “Geospatial technology is already helping our users… your work provides the evidence. A new Geospatial Platform is emerging… Organizing Geospatial content and making it broadly available. This platform will transform our collective business… growing new opportunities… delivering geographic knowledge everywhere.” Jack Dangermond – ESRI Founder 27

MidCont2013 What does the future hold? “The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious.” John Scuffy As Geospatial Professionals we have to work to pay attention to issues, constantly looking solutions, working as a team to build a better system to get the job done. 28

MidCont2013 GIS for Strategic Asset Management Group - GSAM  Group of GIS Professionals from around the country (Fed, State, Regional, University)  Collaborate, share lessons learned (good and bad), code snippets, databases, etc.  Quarterly webinars (open to vendors also) and feature survey

MidCont2013 Where have we been and Where do we go from here? Road Show – Demos & Discussions with management More field & hardware testing Identifying other applications for tablets RFP – Hit the streets in June 2013 for a production application. Working through final tablet options

MidCont2013 Use your resources In Iowa we have IGIC – Iowa Geographic Information Council ICIT – Iowa Counties Information Technology Vendor related free training/ webinars Grassroots groups – GSAM – GIS for Strategic Asset Management 31

MidCont2013 Requirements for Field Use Able to see in full sunlight Touch enabled system Able to survive life in the field Need to have options for taking pictures, collecting audio, etc. Need to follow KISS principles but still gather what is needed 32

MidCont2013 Requirements for Field Use Need to be able to load in existing data Need to be able to be encrypt/secure or ability to wipe out remotely Connected and Disconnected Editing Need to be able to updated incorrectly located features 33

MidCont2013 Collecting Field Information with a Tablet (DEMO) There is an ongoing research project to look at using tablets to do field data inventory and inspection. Hoping to get tablets out for field testing in November (waiting on hardware arrival) The goal is to get at least one out to each garage by sometime next year. 34
