1. Who we are? EAP is a charity, founded and run by ex-Leeds Uni students. We work with local communities in East Africa to create playgrounds and run sports, arts and reading programs for the local children to explore, socialize, relax and play. Running Sports, Arts & Reading programs Why volunteer with us? The projects are built up of a team of 10 volunteers who live in the heart of the community for 1 month, you will build the playground from start to finish, help run sports, arts and reading programs and see where your money is spent. We require no previous travel or building experiences and you will be supported by the EAP team throughout your time with us. The experience and skills you can gain with us can also help you stand out from the crowed in the world of work. What will I be doing for the month in Uganda? You will be spending your weekdays working hard building, running art and reading programs, coaching sports and living the local life. Then at the weekends we organise trips and activities such as safaris, relaxing on the beaches, abseiling down waterfalls and white water rafting on the Nile. Accommodation and Food Accommodation is basic and situated in the centre of the community. You will always have EAP staff on site with you. The local food is rice, potatoes, matooke, posho, chapattis with fish, meat or beans and lots of fruit! The programs are run by qualified Ugandans. We will work alongside parents and teachers to ensure the program can continue once we have left. So you want to come... ? 2. Ownership and Community Developing a sense of ownership and community involvement are vital to the long term success of the projects. We do this by asking the locals to help build the playground, this results in the community being proud of their playground. Weekends Activities Weekends on project are a time for you to explore and adventure. EAP will plan two adventurous weekends away and one chilled weekend with the community. The final weekend is a time of celebration of the playground, there will be singing, dancing and plenty of playing when we officially open the playground. Average day on Project We try to follow this work routine: Breakfast at 7am, Work from 8am-1pm, Lunch 1pm-3pm. Afternoon programs (reading, arts and sports coaching) 3pm – 5pm, Dinner 6pm. Cultural Acceptance EAP values the importance of local culture and therefore as visiting volunteers, you must too. Volunteers must dress appropriately and not drink alcohol during the week. How is the playground built? EAP builds its playgrounds from metal sourced in Uganda. Our Ugandan welder, Ayubu, will make the playground from scratch whilst the volunteers are led by the site manager to clear the land, dig foundation holes then cement in the structure and paint the finished playground!
