6 Rot or Remain! Barb, Jacqui and Claudia’s grade 3/4s did an Inquiry project on whether materials rot or remain. 7 Damien and Meg’s 5/6s We planted trees at the back of the oval with our buddy class.

8 Waratah Special Developmental School Satellite Classes Students get involved in many different garden experiences:  Identifying where the patch lies and developing sensory needs like feeling the dirt, plants and water.  Studying life cycles.  Cutting plants from the ground, chopping and adding to dishes they cook each Friday.

9 Map of our school kitchen garden Environmental Committee Award Each week the class with the cleanest yard duty area wins this glittery award. Students developed this initiative to help improve the cleanliness of our school grounds.

10 WORKING BEES Brunswick South West Primary School have quarterly working bees. The community comes together to help maintain our wonderful school grounds, buildings and kitchen garden.

11 Golden Garden Trophy Award The class with the most parents at the working bee win a fun activity in the garden or cooking with produce from the garden. Activities have included cooking peach cake, creating signs and planting strawberries and raspberries.

12 Friday morning parent gardening group Parents are encouraged to come in and work in the kitchen garden and school grounds on Friday mornings from 9-11am. This volunteer activity builds a sense of community and ownership towards our school garden and grounds.

13 Planting Native Trees This photo shows 3 generations of the Braybon family planting a native tree at our school to celebrate Education Week. Students, parents and teachers planted native trees throughout the school.

14 Re-use and recycle initiatives Students collect food scraps from their classes and deposit into the garden’s worm farms. We are reusing air conditioner straw lined pads for strawberry patches. Worm farms

15 Every student participated in planting 500 native and local trees and grasses on the embankment at the back of our school oval. BEFOREAFTER

16 Some of the special features at our school include: The amazing mosaic kitchen garden sign, the construction of espaliered trees and pea tunnels.

17 New playground facilities The retaining wall around the junior school playground was replaced by money raised from the school Fete!

18 OUR WONDERFUL SCHOOL GROUNDS The pictures below show just a few of the fantastic facilities we have at our school. The playground bridge, colourful lattice, garden noticeboard, circular seating around the featured White Mulberry tree, class planter boxes and mosaic playground seating.

19 Games in the Kitchen Garden Everyone is invited to come and join in some games after school (3.30pm onward) on Friday in the Kitchen Garden. There will be quoits, hookie, hopscotch, tennis, t-ball, maybe some tennis-racquet cricket, and any other games people would like to bring along. Afternoon snacks of dips (made from what is doing well in the garden), Turkish bread and fruit will be provided to keep the kids energy up for running around. Tea and coffee will also be available. Any home baked goodies as additional contributions would be most welcome! The garden is looking great, so many things flowering and growing! Please come and enjoy the view and company of other Brunswick South West Primary Schoolers. The Invitation ALL TOGETHER – WE ARE BRUNSWICK SOUTH WEST. We came together to celebrate our kitchen garden and ground facilities. The Preparation The FUN!!
