6 Root Words All words start out with a root word. This is the basic part of the word. Root words are helpful for learning both the meaning and the spelling of a word. Suffixes and prefixes can be joined to root words in order to make new words.

8 Root Words with both Prefixes and Suffixes
If we can identify the main part of a word, we can then usually identify both the prefix and the suffix if they are there. This is a word - unemployment This is the root - unemployment This is the prefix - unemployment This is the suffix - unemployment

9 Root and Prefix wash – prewash move – remove clean - unclean
Each prefix has a meaning.

10 Root and Suffix wash – washed move – moving clean - cleaner
Each suffix has a meaning.

11 Extra activity available
Look at the cards on the pin board and complete the table that you have been given. Extra activity available

12 Activity 2 – In Pairs Look at the flash cards.
Split the individual words into root and suffix. What additional meaning has the suffix given?

13 Group Activity Share out the laminated cards. As a group, make as many words as you can that have a prefix, a root word, and a suffix. For example: dishonestly

17 Extra Activity Look at the lyrics that you were given at the start of the lesson. Identify words that contain prefixes. Write the word in a list, and use a dictionary to find the meaning of the word.
