Language of the bones 1.Process- projection – Example: mastoid process and styloid process 2.Articulation- joint – Ex: Temporalmandibular joint (TMJ) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMOrT10iEdc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMOrT10iEdc 3.Fossa- depression of a bone – Ex: Anterior Cranial Fossa 4.Sinus- cavity in the bone – Ex: Sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses

Language of the bones Continued… 5. Forman- hole in the bone – Ex: Forman magnum 6. Meatus- tubular structure in a bone – Ex: External Auditory Meatus (Ear hole) 7. Condyles- large smooth curved surfaces forms joint with another bone --Ex: Medial epicondyl 8.Tubercles- Warty outgrowth allows tendons to attach – Ex: greater tubercle

Identify the terms we just learned below 1-7 Humerus Cross section of the skull Lateral View

2 girdles A girdle is a collection of bones that attach to the axial skeleton 1. Upper Extremity or Pectoral Girdle: consists of the clavicle and scapula – Connects at the sternoclavicular joint (clavicle and menubrium) 2. Lower Extremity or Pelvic Girdle: consists of illium (hip), ischium (butt), and the pubic bone – Joins to make the acetabulum
6
Pectoral Girdle Attaches to the upper extremities to the axial skeleton Humerus Radius Ulna Carpals Metacarpals Phalanges
7
Pelvic Girdle Attaches the lower extremities to the axial skeleton
8
Pelvic Girdle Lower extremities include: Femur Patella Tibia Fibula Tarsals Metatarsals Phalanges
