Create a “Close Reading Sheet” to log questions and notes on while we read. Begin reading “Three Skeleton Key” by George Toudouze. (Pages 32-36) Answer Close Reading Questions

What are Le Gleo’s and Itchoua’s reactions to the mysterious ship? What do their reactions tell you about the men? Early in the story the narrator explained how Three Skeleton Key got it’s name. How does this information about the setting shape how the plot develops throughout the text? Day 1: Vocabulary Monotonous- boring, routine, lacking variety Treacherously- dangerous, unsure, untrustworthy

8 Tuesday 2.24.15 Read “Three Skeleton Key” (Pages 37-41).
Day 2 Close Reading Questions: How does the author convey the scene of the rats swarming the lighthouse? What effect does the description have on the reader? Give evidence from the text. What would cause the island’s name to be changed to “Six Skeleton Key”? Give Evidence to support your answer. Day 2: Vocabulary Hordes- a large number, crowd, swarm of animals/people

9 Wednesday Warm-up Copy the quote from the text. Explain what this quote means and how the story could have been different if the narrator had responded differently. “…there were many such stories and I did not give the warnings of the old-timers… a second thought.”

10 Wednesday 2.25.15 Finish reading “Three Skeleton Key.”
Day 3 Close Reading Questions: How did the narrator’s character make it more likely that he would survive and even return to work in the lighthouse? What is a theme of this story? Use evidence from the text to support your response. Day 3: Vocabulary Maniacal- to act like a maniac, lunatic, or insanely. Writhed- to twist the body about, or squirm, as in pain Shrapnel- bullets, metal, missals, designed to explode Fumigated- to cover/surround in smoke or fumes.

13 Friday 2.27.15 Warm-up/Weekly Writing prompt:
Each of the characters in the story respond differently to the rat attack. Select one character from the story and explain how his outlook and approaches to challenges led to his particular outcome. Using details from the story to support your response.
