Learning Outcomes I can identify the solute and the solvent in a solution and describe what these terms mean
2
Making a Copper Sulphate Solution Collect a beaker and a jar of copper sulphate powder. Add a spatula of copper sulphate to the water. Stir until the copper sulphate dissolves. Keep adding until no more copper sulphate dissolves The copper sulphate is the substance which dissolves and is called the solute. The water is dissolving the solute and is called the solvent. When no more copper sulphate dissolves a saturated solution is formed.
3
Use the information from the previous slide and read pages 26 and 27 in Science 5-14, S1. Write down the definitions for each of the following terms in your jotter. Solute Soluble Insoluble Solvent Saturated solution Solution Your teacher may demonstrate a fun experiment which uses a supersaturated solution. This is a saturated solution which has been heated to dissolve the solid. It is very unstable.
4
Vanishing Varnish (1) Water is not the only solvent. Other liquids can also dissolve substances. Collect a slide with 5 streaks of nail varnish and 5 bottles of solvents (water, propanone, ethanol, white spirit and propan-2-ol) Soak a cotton bud with a solvent and rub one of the streaks of nail varnish. Count how many rubs are needed to remove the streak. Repeat with the other solvents. Copy the table on the next slide for your results.
5
Vanishing Varnish (2) Answer the following questions in your jotter. Q1. Which solvent(s) did not dissolve the varnish? Q2. Which solvent(s) did dissolve the varnish? Q3. Which solvent was the best at dissolving the varnish? Give a reason for your answer. SolventDid Solvent Dissolve the Varnish? Number of rubs to remove Varnish water propanone ethanol white spirit propan-2-ol
