DO NOW Read the passage and answer the following questions. You have 10 minutes to silently and independently to complete the Do Now. If you finish early, you may read silently, work on other homework, or request early finisher work with two fingers. Add it to you ‘Do Now’ section of your binder. REMEMBER YOU NEED TO BE WORKING TO RECEIVE CREDIT. Today’s lesson Topic: Solutions and Solubility
2
QUIZ AVERAGES! A1: 68% A2: 73% A4: 72% B2: 74%
3
SOLUTIONS AND SOLUBILITY TODAY’S ESSENTIAL QUESTION: WHAT PUTS THE POP IN SODA POP ?
4
SWBAT Identify solution, solubility, solvent and solute. Describe how a substance can dissolve in water by dissociation, dispersion, or ionization. Identify energy changes that occur during the formation of a solution Describe factors affecting the rate at which a solution dissolves in a solvent.
5
LET’S REVIEW What is a pure substance? What is a compound? What is a mixture? What is the difference between heterogeneous and homogenous?
6
TODAY’S VOCAB ADD TO YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK Solution: is a homogenous mixture with equal parts solvent and solute Solubility: is the maximum amount of a solute that dissolves in a given amount of solvent Solvent: a liquid in which a solute is dissolved Solute: is the substance that is dissolved
7
Types of Solutions SoluteSolventExample Gas Air (oxygen, carbon dioxide in nitrogen) LiquidGasWater in air GasLiquidCarbonated beverage (carbon dioxide in water) SolidLiquidSugar water (sugar in water) Solid Stainless steel (chromium and nickel iron)
8
SO… HOW DOES SODA GET ITS POP? Think-Write-Pair-Share Why do you think the gas escapes when the bottle is opened? It is pressurized and escapes (from higher pressure, to lower) What makes soda hiss, bubble and fizz when you open it? Describe what you see and hear Carbon dioxide when liquid escapes!
9
DEMONSTRATION
10
LET’S FIND OUT… Soda is a SOLUTION where the SOLUTE is dissolved by the SOLVENT (the solute is usually a solid and the solvent a liquid) Think-Write-Pair-Share/Diagram So, what does give the POP?? What happens over time??
11
CARBONATED CANDY Have you ever tasted the candy that sizzles and fizzles in your mouth? The manufacturer makes it by forcing carbon dioxide gas under high pressure into a hot liquid sugar mixture. When the mixture cools and hardens, tiny pressurized bubbles of carbon dioxide gas are trapped within the hard candy. Think-Write-Pair-Share
12
SO HOW DOES THE DISSOLVING TAKE PLACE? Dissociation, dispersion, and ionization Before we move on, what are ions?
13
THESE NEED TO BE ADDED TO YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK Dissociation: the process in which a compound separates into ions. Dispersion: breaking into small pieces that spread throughout the water (like sugar) Ionization: where neutral molecules gain or lose electrons (neutral? Electron?)
14
WHAT FACTORS AFFECT THE RATE OF DISSOLVING- DEMONSTRATION THESE NEED TO BE ADDED TO YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK!! Make a prediction, what happens when the salt is added to the water? So what may affect the rate? 1. Surface area 2. Stirring 3. temperature.
15
LET’S PRACTICE! A picture is worth a thousand words! Draw and give examples the following in your interactive notebook silently and independently Solvent Solute Dissociation Dispersion ionization
16
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK What are three ways that substances can dissolve in water? What physical properties of a solution differ from those of its solutes and solvent? Use the examples we talked about in class today to help you. What factors affect the dissolving rates?
17
EXIT TICKET 1. What gives soda its pop? 2. In soda; which is the solvent, which is the solute? 3. What three ways do substances dissolve? 4. What three factors affect the rate at which a substance dissolves?
