Relationships at the Heart of Leading Dr Wendy Bignold ‘ Relationships at the Heart of Learning’

Quick task As a school principal what are the 4 most important tasks you do: every day every week every month every year

What are the emerging trends in the 21 st Century? Increased emphasis on: the individual rather than the community. competition rather than cooperation. materialism rather than values. secularisation rather than religion or spirituality. global networks rather than local networks (anonymity). change rather than stability – some constancy.

What is unchanged? What is constant? Children still need to be loved and to love. Staff still need to be loved and to love.

In the 21 st century there is a: Growing distrust of politicians Growing distrust of the media Growing distrust of some professional groups where unethical behaviour has been seen A leadership vacuum is emerging

If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children. Mahatma Gandhi The hope that we have to foster in Young people consists of such features as: Optimism Peace Confidence That is true for our staff as well.

Learning/Leading in the 21 st Century What is learning? What is leading or leadership? Learning is on-going self-development and transformation. So is leadership. Learning is a process of discovery and exploration of the world around us. Leadership is an exploration of the people around us. There is not an end-point to them. At their best they are self-motivated. They should be exciting and joyful journeys that leads to the flourishing of individuals and society.

21 st Century Learners/Leaders 21 st century learners/leaders need to be: Resilient Reflective Resourceful Responsible Respectful

Teaching in the 21 st Century 21 st century schools and classrooms have become (or are in danger of becoming): Outcomes focussed Assessment driven Curriculum crowded Business modelled Places of conformity and accountability Is this what we expect of our teachers?

Schools in the 21 st century should be (now more than ever): Places where children feel safe, loved, special Places of awe and wonder Places of exploration and excitement Places of respect and trust Places of values Places of learning; development of knowledge, understanding and skills Is this how our staff feel? The smiling eyes of the teacher....

21 st Century Leaders 21 st century leaders need to: Be good learners Be values driven Be highly professional Have integrity Be good communicators Inspire their staff Be people of love, care and compassion Be ready to serve the world with their gifts

21 st Century Leaders 21 st century leaders need to: Inspire those around them Give confidence to those around them in their own gifts and talents Be strong role models of virtue and compassion Pursue social justice where it is lacking Move from a culture of accountability to one of responsibility Know when to lead from the front and when to lead from the back – give opportunities to others

What leaders are not... Good leaders need not always be: In their later years Highly educated From a particular social class High profile Men Although this may be how they are portrayed in the media Leaders with the above characteristics can be very good leaders

What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches. ~Karl Menninger (American psychiatrist) What the leader is, is more important than what she leads.

Relationships A good leader helps others to be successful... You can only do this if you have positive relationships with the ‘others’... All people are vulnerable and even fragile. - Good leaders remember this. One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody. Mother Theresa

Key questions: Relationships 1.What relationships are encouraged in your school? Teacher-pupil, pupil-pupil, pupil-parent, teacher-parent, principal-? 2.How might you develop these relationships further? 3.Is there a staff member who you do not have a positive relationship with? How can you change this? 4.How do you model positive relationships to your colleagues and students?

What kind of a leader are you? What kind of a leader would you like to be?

Principles of leadership Reflecting on your own philosophy/understanding of leadership and what you heard yesterday.... What are the 3 most significant principles/aspects of leadership for you?.... For example: having a clear vision being an effective communicator being consistent in your actions

Look at the list of the most important tasks you do, which you wrote earlier.... Ask yourself these questions: 1.Do these tasks fit with my principles of leadership? 2.What could I do to make them fit better? 3.What tasks could I do differently or what new things could I do to live out my principles more strongly?

One thing you might do differently or.. One thing you might start doing/introduce.

“Education is power” Power for individuals and communities to do good.... Leaders should use their power to make a positive difference to schools and society.... Remember the sisters
