The public attitude Toward literature was distrust and suspicious Popular literature in the middle ages lost its power Classical literature was pagan and the church had always been suspicious of pagan literature and regarded it as its rival The literature whether it was pagan or not was always opposed to the teachings of the church

The church adopted Plato’s objection to poetry RealityMoralityPsychology Poetry is false & untrue as it is fiction Bible became the Source of true literature It excites bad Passions that should Be restrained It is full of blasphemy Corrupt people And distract their minds Literature leads To excitement Agitation and Emotional outbursts Teachings of religion Encourages devout Means to deal Calmly, gently and Quitely with the Holy spirit
