IN THE PICTURE Part of our responsibility as followers of Jesus is to use our influence to lead others to follow Jesus. We do this in different ways, according to our spiritual gifts. Some of us may be administrators, many of us are parents, teachers and so on. But unless you have been living in an isolated cave for ten or more years, and have been no one during that time, THERE ARE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE.

KNOW YOUR LEADER Whatever your sphere of influence, be it family, or work, knowing and learning how your master led will make you a better leader. A better leader can only be defined by his or her followers. And followers by a good leader.

JESUS’ LEADERSHIP SKILLS 1. He had a skill to attract followers. “ as Jesus was walking by the sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. Come follow me Jesus said and I will make you fishers of men. At once they left their nets and followed Him.” Matt 4:18-20 (NIV)

2.His appearance was influential “going on from there he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets, Jesus called them and Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him.” Matt 4:21

ELLEN WHITE EXPLAINS “ Had it not been for the sweet, sympathetic spirit that shone out in every look and word, He would not have attracted the large congregations that He did. The afflicted ones who came to Him felt that He linked His interest with theirs as a faithful and tender friend, and they desired to know more of the truths He taught. Heaven was brought near. They longed to abide in His presence, that the comfort of His love might be with them continually.” DA, 254-255

3.ONE PLAN. That of being fishers of men. “ to be a follower requires a leader who knows and shows the way.” ( Christ’s way of reaching people,pg 96, by Philip.G. Samaan) Trained them according to the plan.

4.Self distrust Depended fully upon God the father ( Mark 1:35) Upon the guidance of the Holy spirit ( Matt 4) Upon the services of/by the heavenly Angels. ( Matt 4) NB: These were His source of strength. Where and who is your source of strength?

Lesson The last stipulation, but definitely not the least, is grasping the indispensable lesson of self-distrust. Yet we must never experience self-distrust apart from Christ-trust. There must always exist an essential tension between self- trust and Christ –trust, something that we can never assimilate from any human teacher, or any human theory –only the Master teacher Himself (CWRP,pg 112)

5.Compassionate Leader Not His needs but the needs of people “ Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, healing every disease and sickness. When He saw the crowds He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”

J.C Maxwell Jesus’ leadership was empowered not by a sense of duty or obligation, or by a desire to build an image, but by compassion. Great leaders like Jesus, build a deep love for people that moves them to do far more than obligation could ever induce. Do you deeply love those you lead?

6.He knew His followers Met their immediate needs-(Ps 23) Protection ( security) –(Ps 23:4) Dies for His followers ( John 10:10) Knowing them by name vs 14 Their struggles (Judas) Their strengths (Phil 1:6)

Phil 1:6 We are Christ’s construction project, and He is continually working toward its completion. Ellen White describes our gradual process of training as “apprenticeship to Christ”. She states that “ He who called the fishermen of Galilee is still calling men to His service however imperfect and sinful we may be, the Lord holds out to us the offer of partnership with Himself, of apprenticeship to Christ. He invites to come under His divine instruction, that uniting with Him, we may work the works of God.” DA,p297

7.Team work Trained His followers to serve ( He provided opportunities) (Luke 10:1-10) Worked as leader, not a boss (equipper) Trusted them, He actually was a developer ( mentored them to lead others Jesus slowly moved His men from consumers to contributors ( He wanted to get his emerging leaders to think about issues beyond themselves) Even commissioned them ( Matt 28:18-20)

He interceded for them John 17 He prays for Himself For the disciples And for all believers

When Jesus knew He had but twelve hours left to live, He didn’t start big campaigns, He didn’t try to change laws, He didn’t even do any more public ministry He spent the time praying NB: prayer is the chief task to the leader (Acts 6:4) The leadership we provide which no one sees may be more important that what we do in public Followers think of leadership in terms of the visible In reality, leadership is like an iceberg; most of it lies unseen
