- John emphasized the divinity and majesty of Jesus.

Jesus explained to His disciples the meaning of His teachings known as parables.
Jesus conducted both tours, or campaigns, in Galilee and retreats from Galilee.

Jesus made Capernaum His home and “mission base” in Galilee.
Jesus’ public ministry was accompanied by miracles.

1. Miracles were a sign of His Person and of His work (Mk 2:10).

4. Miracles glorify the heavenly Father (Lk :16).

Nain was a village of Galilee located about six miles south of Nazareth.
This woman lost the only means of support she had.
The primary purpose of this miracle was for Jesus to show compassion on the widow.

C. The Demoniac of Gadara (Gerasenes)
Scripture: Mark 5:1-20
Possessed by a legion of unclean spirit.
Purpose of this miracle was to demonstrate Jesus’ authority over the devil’s evil powers.
1 John 3:8 says that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil.
James 4:7 says that you are to “resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

D. The Feeding of the Five Thousand
Scripture: Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-15, 26-35
Only miracle recorded in all four Gospels.
Purpose of this miracle was to teach about Jesus’ person and work.
Jesus used this miracle to teach that He is “the bread of Life” (Jn 6:35).
Caused the people to remember the words of Moses that a prophet like him would come.

This prophet was also the Messiah.
This miracle demonstrated Jesus’ authority in three ways:
1. Showed omnipotence in provided food for the multitude.
2. Revealed His Messiahship.

A. Miracles to Parables
Due to the increase in opposition to Jesus’ ministry from religious leaders, Jesus increased His use of parables and decreased His use of miracles.
Jesus also began to speak less publicly to the crowds and more to those that followed Him.
Jesus used these parables to fulfill the Old Testament passage of Psalm 78:2.

B. Purpose of Parables
The purpose of Jesus’ parables was to both reveal and conceal truth (Mt 13:11-17).

By using these parables, Jesus was using something familiar to explain truths that were unfamiliar.
Jesus’ ultimate purpose was to explain the mysteries of the Kingdom of God.

According to John 3:17, Jesus came to save the world, not condemn it.
One distinction of a parable is that it does not necessarily refer to real people or to actual places.
Younger son represented sinners who return to God.
The joy expressed by the father shows the joy our Heavenly Father has when a sinner repents.

Application:
As Christians we should always be looking for ways to help others return the Lord.

Through His transfiguration, Jesus revealed that He was greater than Moses and Elijah and that He would fulfill the Law and the Prophets (Mt 5:19)
Peter misunderstood the transfiguration because he wanted this moment to continue, but Jesus had to suffer, die and be raised.

Peter also may have thought that these three represented the three cornerstones of Israel’s faith: Moses (Law), Elijah (Prophets), Jesus (Messiah)

At the transfiguration, the voice of God came from a cloud (Lk 9:35).

Jesus’ response to the accusations was to speak the truth and to continue His mission to the end.
John 1:4-5: Jesus meant for His life and teaching to give light to the minds and hearts of men and women.
Accusation: Jesus did not participate in the proper religious washings.
Response: Pharisees were unclean cups and tombs Lk 11:39-40, 44).

Accusation: Jesus broke the law by healing on the Sabbath.
