2 Early Life  He was born in Texas in 1890  He was very good at sports  He went to West Point  Met his future wife in Texas

3 Education  Eisenhower attended West Point and graduated in the top half of his class

4 Army Career  Started as a 2 nd Lt. in Texas after graduating from West Point  Was made the overall leader in the assault on Normandy  Later became the Supreme Allied Commander in the European Theater

5 Before the presidency  After the war he took a job as the president of Columbia University  He was later granted command of the NATO forces  Some Republicans in Paris convinced him to run for president in the early 50’s on their ticket

6 Job Training  His job training mainly came from his being a general in the military.  He took this and applied it to his presidency by using the threat of force to make enemies back down

7 Suez Canal Crisis  When the Suez Canal crisis occurred Eisenhower threatened to use nuclear weapons on all involved if hostilities did not cease.

8 The U-2 Incident  In 1960 a US pilot in a U-2 plane was shot down while taking pictures of the Soviet Union  This led to the Soviet leader Khrushchev to not attend a scheduled peace summit out of anger

9 I Like Ike  The motto for his campaign was “I Like Ike”

10 The Interstates  Eisenhower saw the autobahn system in Germany and realized the US needed one too for military transportation
