Spielberg as a child Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on December 18, 1947. He was the oldest and the only son of four children. The first film that Spielberg recalled seeing in a movie theater was The Greatest Show When Spielberg was sixteen, he filmed a feature-length science fiction movie, which he entitled Firelight. This movie was over two hours long and had a complex plot about an encounter with some aliens. His father rented a local movie theater to show the film. In one night it made back the $500 it cost to film it. Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on December 18, 1947. He was the oldest and the only son of four children. Spielberg a little older Spielberg's poor grades in high school prevented him from entering the University of Southern California (UCLA), but he was accepted at California State College at Long Beach. He graduated in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in English. He also cajoled (flattered and manipulated) his way past the guards at Universal Studios and watched major projects being filmed.

Faking his way in. It was a minor hitch since, by the age of 22, Spielberg was signed up by Universal. Legend has it that the canny Steven inveigled his way into the industry by sneaking away from a tour of Universal studios, finding an abandoned janitor's backroom, doing it up as an office and turning up for work every day until someone mistakenly gave him some work to do

First Major Film Sugarland Express (1974) starring Goldie Hawn was his first feature film, a year before he directed the mega hit Jaws (1975).

Fun Fact His longtime friend George Lucas originally wanted him to direct the third entry of the original Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) and Spielberg was eager to do so, but Lucas was unsuccessful in getting him the job because of his dispute with the Director's Guild at the time.
