To prepare herself she took a medical training with the American Medical Missionary sisters at Patna.
Her first course of action was to gather the children from the slums of Kolkata and start to teach them.
In 1950 her group received official status as a religious community.
Members took the traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, but they added a fourth vow- to give free service to the most poor.
In 1957 the Missionary of charity received significant publicity.
