2 Unit 6e: What can we learn from Christian religious buildings? Look at the words below. Which of these things do you think are valuable, and which are not? Money Parents Happiness Wood Siblings Toys Soil Sharing Are things which are valuable always ‘real’ things that you can touch? Imagine you have a ‘spiritual treasure chest’ Make a list of ten things which you would like to put in it. Remember that you don’t just have to have ‘real’ objects.

3 Unit 6e: What can we learn from Christian religious buildings? Looking at Christian religious buildings can help us work out what Christians think is valuable. Look at the two pictures of Christian religious buildings below. What are the differences? Brainstorm words to describe the two buildings, and use this to make a list of the similarities and differences between the two buildings.

4 Unit 6e: What can we learn from Christian religious buildings? Below are some objects which are used in Christian worship. Do you know what each one is used for? Choose one of the objects, or another object you may have seen on a visit to a church. Think about how you can use the object to develop different words, for example: Candle : light, warmth, rays, melt

5 Unit 6e: What can we learn from Christian religious buildings? Think about the two styles of religious building you have looked at. Draw a diagram like the one below to show the different features of the two buildings and the features which are shared by both: Features of building A Features of building B Features shared by both Design a leaflet or small book for each of the two types of building, explaining the features and items you would expect to find in there.

6 Unit 6e: What can we learn from Christian religious buildings? Imagine that you, or your group are the architect who has been chosen to design a new ecumenical church in a small village. You need to produce detailed instructions for the floor plans, as well as what type of windows, furnishings and decorations will be used. Things to think about: What groups of people are going to be using this building? Should the design of the building be about grandeur or friendliness? Will all the different groups be able to have all the different features from their own traditions put into the design, or will there have to be a compromise? Do you think it is more important that the different groups can co- operate than that they should get the features they want?
