DesignDesign Salt comes from the mines under the Great Lakes. Salt is made from the compounds Sodium Chloride. Salt will never decompose and will last forever if it isn't absorbed. The Metal Container is also needed to package salt. The metal is tin which comes from a variety of different tin mining companies. This will last until it rust or is transformed or mixed with a different element. Salt comes from the mines under the Great Lakes. Salt is made from the compounds Sodium Chloride. 3 Materials Acquisition The raw materials needed are salt, which is directly obtained from either the sea, or underneath the Great Lakes. Another raw material needed is tin, which is used for the metal packaging. Lastly, trees are needed to make the paper to make the label on the containers The raw materials needed are salt, which is directly obtained from either the sea, or underneath the Great Lakes. 4 Materials Processing The way we get salt from under the Great Lakes is to mine it using drills to harvest the salt. Tin is harvested in various countries such as England, China, and The U.S.A. The paper that is used for the label comes from trees. The way we get salt from under the Great Lakes is to mine it using drills to harvest the salt. 5 ManufacturingManufacturing The tin is formed into a cylinder with an opening at the top. Then the salt is crushed into tiny pieces, moved onto a conveyer belt, then poured into the cylinder. Then the top is sealed on with a slot allowing the package to be opened. Then the labels are glued and wrapped around the tin.

PackagingPackaging Morton’s salt is packaged with 100% recycled cardboard and plastic.

DistributionDistribution After the salt is packaged they are loaded onto shipment trucks or if the salt is going to other countries they are put on boats. The transportation does produce Carbon Dioxide and other greenhouse gases. 8 UseUse The product is mainly used for flavoring foods. It has no waste because your body absorbs it through the nephron (a kidney cell).

Reuse/RecycleReuse/Recycle This product itself can not be reused, but the packaging can. The tin can that holds the salt can be used as many things, such as a container to hold water, a pencil bin, a pot to cook with, etc. The cardboard box can be used for storage or can be recycled as well as the paper label.

DisposalDisposal Salt can harm the environment because if it where to become runoff and get into a lake or a river it could kill the plants and animals in there because they can’t live with salt in their ecosystem.
