5 History of the IMechE Est. 1847 to recognise engineering excellence. George Stephenson first president. Created due to the boom in Mechanical Engineering in Britain following the advent of the railways and industrialisation. Received a Royal charter in 1930. Now over 100,000 members worldwide. 20 The Engineers’ Careers Guide will be distributed to all Final year students at the start of the academic year.
