2 + Objectives The student will be able to predict the outcome of two objects colliding. The student will be able to conduct a scientific experiment to discover energy transfer.

3 + Children’s Ideas On Science Children often have the misconception that energy is found in living things only. In this lesson, students will learn that inanimate objects posses energy as well. They will observe and make predictions about the changes in the energy of a marble as it rolls down a ramp and collides with another marble.

4 + Materials Marbles Two per group Cardboard tube Marked with positions A, B, C, D One per group Tube holder One per group Measuring tape One per group Colliding Marbles Worksheet

5 + Vocabulary Energy- ability to do work Law of Conservation of Energy- energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but it can be transferred to another object Collision- when two objects bump into each other and the energy is transferred from one object to the other Position- location of an object in space Speed- distance an object travels in a certain amount of time

7 + Questions How did colliding the marbles at different heights affect the distance that the stationary marble traveled? Based on what you know now, how would you explain how energy changes when objects collide?
