Introducing the Forest Planner a project of Ecotrust Free web-based decision support for landowners in Oregon and Washington Growth Model Users Group. Vancouver, WA (Nov 11, 2013)

Target Audience & Goals Audience: Private forest owners in Oregon and Washington with multiple stands and different timing for management entries, likely covering ownership from tens to thousands of acres. Goal: Provide user-friendly decision support technology to support forest management planning. Mapping a property, management units, and forest types Designing customized management scenarios Visualizing outcomes of scenarios for meaningful comparisons Needs to be easy to use

5 ecoregions/FVS variants + 2,000 – 6,000 plots in each region from PNW FIA Integrated Database + Spectrum of 20-30 ecoregion- appropriate management prescriptions + Several “offsets” to smooth harvest over time = 1,661,800 simulations A ‘Big Data’ Approach

Mapping

Assigning Forest Types

Nearest Neighbor Matching User inputs (derived stand geography & stand tables) used to match nearest neighbor in PNW FIA Integrated Database. Nearest neighbor considers stand age, slope, aspect, elevation, basal area, presence/absence of species and species-diameter cohorts. Currently chooses one IDB plot as match that will stand-in for the user’s stand.

Prescriptions to Scenarios

Visualizing Outcomes

Now in Beta Testing Launching at Clackamas Tree School (March 22, 2014)

Diving into Climate-FVS

Variable Climate Predictions RCP 4.5RCP 6.0RCP 8.5

OSU GNN dataset We can crosswalk (almost) every single GNN pixel’s plot to hundreds of simulations we have run Revisiting ‘Big Data’

Leveraging ‘Big Data’ Capacity Ecotrust now providing: Customized high-throughput modeling (streamlined, custom build from open-fvs) Watershed- and regional-scale optimization for multiple objectives (simulated annealing) Climate vulnerability assessments and prioritization for monitoring and management User-friendly interface for decision support tools
