Feb’2002 SCV training An Example I Wish I used this week! u “Welcome, My name is Jonathan David, Program Chair for the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the Solid State Circuits Society.” u Researcher’s have long promised to bring the productivity of Automatic Synthesis to Analog IC design. After many years this effort is starting to pay off with practical productivity aids that can be used within existing design flows. Tonight’s speaker will explain and demonstrate one of these aids to us. u After November’s meeting where we learned about Barcelona’s approach, I was looking for an opportunity to learn about Neo-Linear’s approach to this problem, and had the good fortune to talk to their marketing folks at the Cadence User Group. Barb Cramer introduced me to Lou Prado, who is currently one of their Neo-Circuit tool experts.

Feb’2002 SCV training Last Weeks Hindsight cont’d u Prior to joining Neolinear, Lou was project lead on several Mixed Signal IC designs at Microchip. u Lou earned his both his BSEE and MSEE at Arizona State, where he also served as Student Branch Chair. u Lou has been awarded 2 IC design patents and has one pending for a CAD algorithm. He is continuing his education in Business Management and Classical Guitar. u Tonight he will show us how to rapidly generate an optimal circuit sizing using NeoLinear’s NeoCircuit tool and give suggestions for more effective use of such tools in a design organization. Please help me welcome Lou Prado.

8. Feb’2002 SCV training Dr. Tom Lee - Stanford u Welcome. I’m Jonathan David, (now) chair of the largest IEEE section. u We are the largest section largely due to the success of the Integrated Circuit industry. When our SSC chapter was formed our second speaker brought the history of Radio Design to life and sent us home with reminders about design we could all use. u Dr. Lee has been teaching the “Opamp” class at Stanford for 9 years now, to a capacity crowd, in spite of the challenging workload of the class (to which I can personally attest). u After I signed up for Thomas Lee’s Analog IC design class this fall, I was delighted when he touched on the origins of the Integrated Circuit in his first lecture, and I hoped he had more of that history up his sleeve for us. u His lovely wife, Angelina, assures me that inviting him to talk here will earn me an A, but I have a hard time understanding how asking him to work harder will raise my grade.

Feb’2002 SCV training Dr. Lee - Continued u In Addition to asking his students to actually DESIGN circuits, he maintains an active interest in the stories of the people involved in our industry, some of which is included in his book, “the Design of CMOS Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuits.” u In addition to his job as an Associate Professor at Stanford, he advises a number of start-ups, and recently helped to found Matrix Semiconductor, whose major product announcement you may have seen yesterday (Dec 4 2001). u Before coming to the West Coast, Dr. Lee taught circuit design at MIT, which incidentally, is where he earned his BSEE, MSEE, and Ph.D. u Tonight he will enlighten us on the origins of the Integrated Circuit, and attempt to prognosticate on the future of the industry that has given our Valley it’s name. Please help me welcome Dr. Thomas Lee.
