The Schedule… Intro Slides Architecture of GeoLink Build a GeoLink Project – Demo Lunch Your turn…build a project Background map discussion.
3
DASM – GeoLink Project set-up… The GeoLink v 6.4 project Consists of of.def,.prj,.reg files, keypad files (.pad), and Data folders - Log and Translate folders Replicate directory structure if copying projects to another PC Use ‘Template_Project’ and ‘Save As’ to create projects…
4
GeoLink project files.. Project contains: Feature definitions (points, polys) Table definition for the features, virtual keypads Display settings for background maps (Projection, attribute display, theme colors, etc) GPS info (COM port, type of receiver, baud rate, etc Translation settings (Coordinate system output) GPS C:\SketchMap\ \.prj C:\SketchMap\ \.def C:\SketchMap\ \.reg C:\SketchMap\Background_Maps\*.gor C:\SketchMap\Background_Maps\*.shp Background Maps
5
How GeoLink works….logging GPS Data GeoLink Logging PC Hard drive LOG Folder* Shapes (Points, Lines, Polys) Microsoft Access file (*.mdb) Attribute information GPS data (*.dat) ‘Enter’ Key * These files are referred to as proto-shapefiles. C:\SketchMap\Log\ \.mdb C:\SketchMap\Log\ \.dat C:\SketchMap\Log\ \ \.shp,.shx, slx
6
GeoLink Project set-up…cont Multiple projects in same directory? All write to same Log and Translate folders …and the use the same keypad files. User interface… Aerial Sketchmapping Customizations turned on Multi-Document Interface (MDI) Active document is the one on top.. Toolbars and Menus available based on active document Process menu – access to documents
7
Coordinate systems in GeoLink…. Background Maps Coordinate system of each background map Proper display of background maps… Selected coordinate system units will display while logging. Data independent. Coordinate system selected in screen settings display dialog. Coordinate system selected in translate GIS dialog. Translate GIS dialog Screen settings dialog. Output shapefiles Data translated will be in the specified coordinate system and units.

How GeoLink works…translation LOG Folder Shapes (Points, Lines, Polys) Microsoft Access file (*.mdb) Attribute information GPS data (*.dat) TRANSLATE Folder ESRI Shapefiles PC Hard drive Translation Settings PC Hard drive Translate files…. View, Post-Process in GIS
9
DASM – Mission Planning… Digitize flightlines and/or survey area boundaries. Organize background map data USGS DRG, Satellite-based, OrthoPhotos, Shapefiles Use a logical file structure, such as district/forest boundaries or USGS quad boundaries. Develop attributing scheme

Background folders may be placed at any appropriate geographic level, as determined by the area of coverage of the contained files. Consider placing background data in sub-folders named for the coordinate system or geographically-referenced quad names. Digital Aerial SketchMapping… Software set-up demo
12
DASM – Raster map issues.. Raster maps – DRGs, Image maps, DOQQs Formats -.tiff,.sid,.jpg Need the world file… GeoLink Optimized Raster files (.gor) Quick display refresh…using pyramid layers Only viewable in GeoLink …so you need to keep the other files around to use in ArcGIS or ArcView.
13
DASM – Raster map issues.. Performance considerations… Too many background maps and system will bog down… How much is too much? Things that seem to help… Fewer large map tiles instead of many smaller ones.. “Burning” of vector data (roads, contours) into imagery If software begins to act flaky, remove some maps from the map list…
14
Digital Aerial SketchMapping…Post-processing Post-Processing – What are your goals? Produce polygons from points Rectify polygons that overlap Combine shapefiles from surveys Calculate acres and TPA Create a map of surveyed areas from flightlines Format feature attribute tables Output point coordinates to GPS for field checks
15
Digital Aerial SketchMapping…Post-Processing Translate data from GeoLink Projection considerations Data editing (QA/QC) Softcopy editing using ArcView GIS Changing feature position or boundary Deleting erroneous features Checking feature attributes

Digital Aerial SketchMapping…SketchTools SketchTools…an ArcView 3.x GIS extension

Digital Aerial SketchMapping…Post-processing ShapeTools – ArcGIS 8.x – 9.x extension Also ODF Xtools….
