2. Introduction We are going to tell you all about Sectarianism and how it affects those of us who live in Glasgow. You may not know this but everyday people around you commit this offence to anyone who supports a different team, is of a different religion, or even has the same religion but they worship in a different way.

3. What Is Sectarianism ? Sectarianism is when two sections of the same religion begin a disagreement. This can lead to violence, pain, wounds and sometimes death, as well as being a bad example to younger generations. Sectarianism is also when groups or sections of people can be separated or excluded.

4. How does it affect us? Sectarianism affects us because many people have displayed this type of behaviour at some point in their life. Sometimes friends will try to persuade you to take part in Sectarian acts, this can be known more commonly as peer pressure. Peer pressure can work both ways - not only can you be influenced into doing something you’re not keen on, you can also stop friends from doing something they shouldn’t be doing.

5. What are Stereotypes? Stereotypes are what people assume certain things to be… All Scottish people like haggis and wear kilts, when in fact they don’t. It is a similar issue with Protestants and Catholics. A lot of people think that all Protestants support Rangers and all Catholics support Celtic, when in fact this is not true.

6. Different Stereotypes * All blondes are thick. * All boys like football. * All Americans eat McDonalds. * All women are bad drivers. * All hoodies drink Buckfast. * Girls are smarter than boys. * People who wear hoodies cause trouble.

7. Key words and definitions Prejudice - To judge someone before you have met them. This can be a very dangerous thing to do although it is sometimes difficult not to pre-judge. Bigotry - To dislike people who are different from you. Religious Intolerance -Not accepting someone else's believes or actions.

8. Key words and definitions Attitude – people should have a positive attitude towards one another and the opposing team, And should not display sectarian behaviour. Behaviour – everyone should support their own team and behave appropriately at football matches, especially towards the opposite team and their supporters. Assume - to assume someone is Catholic because they support Celtic is prejudice, the same as to assume all Protestants support Rangers. Respect – we all must respect each others religions and beliefs. We also must respect each others decisions.

9. Problems and Solutions Unhealthy Team Rivalry Encourage football teams to promote healthy team rivalry rather than arguing and violence. Violence Show people the consequences of gang violence and here it is > People in society and the police suffer because some people can’t support their team in a positive way.

10. Problems and Solutions Young People - Try and encourage young people into clubs and provide more anti- violence and anti-sectarianism projects. Make Streets Safer – Get our young children off the streets before a certain time and make this a law. Parents - Inform parents that their children are not safe!!!!!!!!

11. Change – who and how? MSPs Councillors Teachers Young people Parents Police Football clubs and supporters Media RIPPLE EFFECT

12. Our opinions Children - we think this project has helped us understand more about Sectarianism and how it effects us and people around us. Parents – “This project has been of great benefit to the children in encouraging them to understand many different peoples’ points of view.” “This project has promoted closer partnerships within the community. This is great as I was brought up to hate Catholics and don’t want my children to follow in these footsteps.” “A great way for kids to make friends and realise no matter what school they attend, we are all human beings.” Teachers – we think that it has been wonderful to work with other young people from our community. We hope that other similar projects will happen in the future.

13. Slogans * Religion its there to help, not to hurt. * Blue,red, white and green, doesn’t matter, whatever your team. * 1 life, 1 destiny, 1 chance, 1 dream. Don’t hurt the other team. * Kick Sectarianism out of our Community. * Tackle it…Kick Sectarianism out of our City of Glasgow. * 1 life, 1 chance. Say No to Sectarianism!
