Issues that Surround our World (and how we can change them)

CHILD LABOUR O Many children all over the world do some kind of work (after school job, help out with chores, etc.) O This kind of work is great: you build skills and earn extra cash. O It’s NOT child labour.

O Work that is HARMFUL to a child’s physical and mental development is considered to be CHILD LABOUR. O They are kept from school and the chance to improve the situation they were born into. O The are often put in danger. O 22,000 children die from accidents related to their work.

Child Labour is defined as: O Work performed by a child under the age of 18 O Long hours of work on a regular or full-time basis O Abusive treatment by the employer O No access, or poor access, to education

Child Labour Includes: O Selling things in the street O Working in someone’s house as a servant O In these cases, it’s not so much the work itself that’s bad, but how the child is treated, how many hours a day they work and whether the work prevents them from going to school

“Worst Forms” of Child Labour O “hazardous work”: work that is difficult and is harmful to the child’s physical development. O Includes: carrying heavy loads using dangerous machinery spraying pesticides working in unclean environments

“Unconditional Worst Forms” O No matter what the circumstances are, no matter how much is paid or how little child does, it is illegal- even for adults. O This includes: slavery buying and selling of a human being forced or bonded labour using children in armed conflict prostitution pornography involvement with drugs

Their Own Story O Each child has their own story. O Iqbal’s example: poverty causes parents to sell their child to a factory or mine. O Because of labour laws and high unemployment, it can be easier for an adult to make a child work informally than for them to find a wage-paying job.

Other Causes: O Illness can also be the cause of child labour. O A parent may be too sick to work, or worse. O In Africa, HIV/AIDS has orphaned 12 million children, taking them out of school to care for their siblings, run the household and earn an income in any way they can.

Children’s Rights O Every child in the world has the right NOT to work and deserves a fair chance to learn and be healthy. O Many kids fall into the cracks and can’t get out themselves. O That’s where we come in…

What We Can Do O Even a small group of brave kids can make a difference! O Speak up and speak out, stand beside kids around the world to fight for a fair chance to grow up healthy and happy. O Educate others on this issue and get involved!
