Gratitude: “…In the heat of competition it’s easy to get stuck on what is NOT going well, which causes you to lose sight of how lucky you are to be able to race. In the big picture of life, your finish time or place will have little bearing on the sun rising or the seasons changing. When it gets tough, remind yourself that you are the one who put yourself in the race. No one forced it upon you. Find that place within yourself that is grateful to be alive and fit enough to even consider undertaking a triathlon. For every one of you, there are millions who dare not dream such a grand adventure for their lives.” - Mark Allen

It’s Decal Night! What was your biggest “take-away” from your first triathlon?

My Ironman by the numbers (Jason Alvis - IRONMAN Australia, 3 May): 1. # of marathons I have run in my life. 2. # of times I threw up on the swim (within about 2 seconds of each other), approximately 700 meters from the finish. 3. # of times I had to stop and fix my dropped chain (That came off each time going from the small to the big ring. Weird.) 4. # of York peppermint patties I ate, one per lap of the marathon. Never thought of them as a pick me up, but they worked! 5. # of porta-potty stops. (4 and the tree-line once. I won't break down sitting and standing by the numbers...) 6. # of times my wife (also racing) and I saw each other on the course. 7. 77.7 kg -- my weight before the race. 8. # of applications of Bio-freeze to my calves, knees and quads. (1 app per leg at T1 and 3 special needs stops during the run.) 9. # of water bottle exchanges (at least) during the ride. I took on water at most stations and grabbed a coke bottle, took a swig and discarded before the end of the aid station. 10. The rating I would give the experience on a 1-10 scale...I did much better than I predicted. I completed a marathon in under 4 hours. I trained and raced with my wife / best friend (Jewel). My mother-in-law took one of the hardest jobs by watching three kids and taking pictures and tracking two racers -- and completely got into the spirit of the race.
