3 Session Goals Participants will have the opportunity to explore and discuss: different meanings and representations of fractions student misconceptions of fraction concepts in the Gr. 9-12 curriculum 3

4 Group Norms All ideas will be listened to carefully and responded to respectfully. Everyone will have a voice. All questions and comments will be presented with the intent to move the collective forward. Clarifying questions are welcome. Everyone will engage fully in the moment. 4

5 Session Agenda Notice and Wonder –your experiences with students as they work with fraction concepts Representing Fractions – your experiences with different representations of fractions 5

6 Sticker Bar Graph Introduce yourself at your table i.e. your name, where/what you teach, something about yourself Place stickers on the posted chart paper to make a double bar graph: a red sticker for each course you have taught a green sticker for each course you will teach next year and/or each course you would like to focus on in camp 6

8 Notice and Wonder Think about your experiences with students as they work with fraction concepts – wherever and however they come up in Gr. 9-12. Think about watching them, listening to them, talking to them, and reviewing their work. What have you noticed? What do you wonder? Take a few minutes to jot down some thoughts on the worksheet. 8

9 Notice and Wonder Share items from your worksheet with your small group. As a group, select 1 or 2 items to share with the whole group. 9

11 Representing Fractions Create a fraction, e.g. numeric or algebraic or other? Represent your fraction in as many ways as you can. Write each representation on a sticky note – one representation per sticky note. 11

12 Representing Fractions Form larger groups by combining 2 or 3 small groups. Pick up chart paper and markers. Pool your sticky notes. Group and categorize the sticky notes into whatever categories seem appropriate. Label each category. Post your work for others to view. 12

13 Representing Fractions What criteria did you use to group the sticky notes? Which ones were difficult to place? Why? Were there some you kept moving from category to category? Why? 13
