What is a verb? Verb is a doing word or a state of being word Root: verbum (Latin) = word (most important word in a sentence. No sentence possible without a verb) (verbose = wordy, verbatim= exact words) indicates action or a state of being of the subject. 5 kinds of verbs: transitive, intransitive, linking, main, and auxiliary

TRANSITIVE VERB: Has Object ACTION VERB THAT HAS AN OBJECT. A VERB THAT TRANSFERS ITS ACTION TO AN OBJECT (PERSON / THING). VERB+WHOM? VERB+WHAT? The judge sentenced (sentenced whom?) the convict. The attorney revealed (revealed what?) the news. The defendant could not provide (could not provide what?) an alibi. 1

INTRANSITIVE VERB: No Obj. AN ACTION VERB THAT HAS NO OBJECT. ACTION ENDS ABRUPTLY. ACTION IS MODIFIED BY AN ADVERB, ADVERB PHRASE, OR A PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE Alice complained bitterly. She worked with care and precision. Hershey ran into the woods. 2 2

LINKING VERB: links subj. INDICATES STATE OF BEING OR CONDITION FOR THE SUBJECT, NOT ACTION CONNECTS SUBJECT TO A NOUN, PRONOUN, OR ADJECTIVE. Forms of verb “to be” = is, am, was, are Seem, look, smell Sarah is a genius. Roads were a slushy mess. Mark seemed nervous. She looks frightened. 3 3 3

MAIN VERB: main part SOME VERBS HAVE 2 OR MORE PARTS. THE MAIN PART OF THE VERB IS MAIN VERB. SIMPLE PRESENT & SIMPLE PAST HAVE ONLY A MAIN VERB Sentences in other tenses have a main verb and an auxiliary (helping) verb Carton will pretend to be asleep. Gloria has taken her dog to training. She gives her money to charity. 44 44

AUXILIARY VERB : Helping Verb A verb that helps main verb forms of “to be” = is, are “to do” = did, done “to have”= has, had shall, should may, might can, could Ann was feeling tired. Time does run out. Someone should have predicted these complications. I cannot come to the banquet. I have bought me a cow. 5 5 5 55

Summary: 5 kinds of verbs Transitive verbs are action verbs with an object. Elena built a sandcastle Intransitive verbs are action verbs but have no object. They dance well. Linking verbs are not action verbs but link subj. to another word. She is a singer. Main verb shows main action of the verb. She bought a car. Auxiliary verb helps main verb.
