BIODIVERSITY MODULE REVEIW Funded by the Teacher Quality Program A project of : The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, The GA Museum of Natural History and Georgia 4-H
2
BIODIVERSITY MODULE REVIEW Overview: In this module, learners work as naturalists, displaying curiosity as they investigate biodiversity on their school site. Activities include biodiversity hunts, a school site species count, a line transect, a plot sampling activity and activities about medicinal plants and other species that have economic significance. Specific activities examine threats to species diversity that can ultimately lead to extinction.
3
BIODIVERSITY MODULE Enduring Understandings: Learners will understand that… * All ecosystems contain a variety of organisms that are interdependent. Essential Questions: What is an ecosystem? What is biodiversity? What is the relationship between maintaining ecosystems and biodiversity?
4
Major Concepts: 1. Natural areas represent storehouses for species and genetic diversity. 2. Maintaining biodiversity is important for the stability of interdependent species in an ecosystem. 3. Important products have been obtained from wild species and many other useful products are still to be discovered. 4. Overpopulation, over consumption of resources, and poverty creates pressure that leads to the loss of natural areas. BIODIVERSITY MODULE
