Creating a symbiosis of ideas John Coburn Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums @j0hncoburn

Design a museum that invests in ideas. Provokes ideas, supports ideas, gives ideas a platform to positively impact on civic and cultural life. A museum where inspiring and drawing ideas from the public is interdependent and of equal importance.

Design a museum that invests in ideas. Provokes ideas, supports ideas, gives ideas a platform to positively impact on civic and cultural life. A museum where inspiring and drawing ideas from the public is interdependent and of equal importance. “Don’t worry too much about the budget”

Develop a framework for public ideas to create profound public impact

Battersea Arts Centre. A civic space at the heart of its community where local people shape ground-breaking, internationally- acclaimed theatre. BAC’s mission is to invent the future of theatre, aiming to create: A community that explores its history and looks to its periphery for inspiration A theatre where our collective imagination is a catalyst to change the world.

Scratch: a methodology for developing new ideas by engaging the artist/producers in a dialogue with the audience. “A successful local (museum) will be an expression of the whole community in a geographically defined area…A successful specialist (museum) will serve a community of interest – people with common interests”.

Museum’s fundamental role is ideas enabler, not experience designer

Science Gallery: “a place where ideas meet and opinions collide”. External communities are invited to conceptualise and design every exhibition to stimulate debate around today’s scientific issues (via an open call). Interdisciplinary ideas; fuzzy boundaries between science & art. Visitor participation is real scientific research.

Incubate creative ideas that mutually benefit the museum and new business

The museum as a home for start ups and new business ideas that support the mission of the museum. timeSpace- New York Times initiative invites entrepreneurs to base themselves in their office and grow their businesses. “Our core purpose remains to enhance society by creating, collecting and distributing high-quality (news and information). We want to push ourselves and push others to find the best ways to do so, and we believe that timeSpace can be a part of that process”.

Incubate creative ideas that mutually benefit the museum and the local community

The New Museum (NYC) incubator offers facilities and support to up to 70 people to develop ideas linked to museum’s art, design, technology focus. Their ideas will address the museum’s mission and a variety of urban issues including the environment, transportation and poverty. The museum creates a safe, welcoming place to meet local people, engage with complex ideas, create something to benefit local community.

Promote collections as a starting point for ideas

TWAM promotes collections as starting point for ideas & experimentation Objects and collections are raw data; impact comes from an articulation of its value/meaning Success is not in the perceived quality of outputs but in establishing and nurturing a culture of reuse, connecting disparate people and ideas.
