Challenges and Opportunities Research: To understand the impact of life-style, social context and environment on public health and the healthcare system To develop new ways of prevention, diagnosis and treatment Analysis of the system: From the macro-level of the health care system to the treatment of the individual patients in order to improve health care delivery, diagnosis and treatment Health Care System Challenges: ageing population lifestyle, working and living environment related health issues Opportunities: regenerative medicine translational medicine

Public Health Research Research focus: Risk factors and genetics of obesity, cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases Behavioural aspects of their genesis Effects of stress on health and mental health Distribution and determinants of health-related states in specific populations Analysis of health care delivery and efficiency: Effectiveness of care health promotion and disease prevention Population’s access to care Economic and social effects of home-based health care Information and communication technology applications to health 67% of preventable healthcare costs due to unhealthy behaviours

Environmental Health Research Direct pathological effects of : chemicals, radiation and some biological agents Research: monitoring / traceability technologies and risk reduction immunological approaches genetic susceptibility assessment of individuals time related effects of indoor and outdoor environments Indirect pathological effects of : the physical, psychological, social and aesthetic environment (housing, urban development, and transport) 25 – 33% of major causes of disease associated with environmental factors 6-9000 French city dwellers die prematurely because of air pollution 1/6 of death and diseases of children attributed to environmental factors Knowledge base and concrete measures for policy-making

Regenerative Medicine Age-related diseases: cancer, cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases focus on cell therapy Aims: To treat previously untreatable diseases and health conditions To Repair tissue or organ damage caused by ageing To Replace existing pharmaceutical treatments (improved tolerance and efficiency) To assess the economic impact and to develop a new economic industry strand Medical applications of tissue engineering: regenerating damaged tissues in vivo and creating tissues ex vivo for implantation Research topics: Pluripotent stem cells Cell and tissue engineering Biomolecules and/or supporting structures Novel materials for bio-devices Development of imaging and modelling tools

Translational Research Approach: To use relevant models of diseases and small patient populations to establish a proof of concept To transfer results from bench to bedside To profile through genomics and proteomics technologies in order to tailor suitable therapies for each patient (personalized medicine) Goals: To reduce the rates of adverse drug reactions (almost 7% of new hospital admissions) To reproduce recent success in cancer treatment in other diseases To develop new technologies and technology transfer to the diagnostic industry To send new impulses for improving public health, clinical procedures and cures Multidisciplinary research activity focused on translating basic research findings into a useful therapeutic drug candidate or diagnostic tool
