2 The 4 Rs (skills) Recognition... Recognize Reflection.... Reflect Reframing.... Reframe Responding... Respond

3 Recognition Recognizing what’s actually happening with real experience Thought Emotions Physiology (action) Defines human experience

4 Recognize  Recognition Cognitive Emotional Physical Thinking Feeling Doing

5 Recognize Understand if my physiology is working for or against decision making. Exuberant/Excited – may be working against me to make a good decision (chemical) Scared/Anxious -- may not be in the best place to make a clear decision

6 Recognition Able to recognize...what I’m thinking...how I’m feeling...what’s going on with me physiologically Recognize and understand is this a good time to be making decisions?

7 Things Outside What are the things going on outside of me that may be stimulating my experience Positive? Negative? Outside stimulation will stimulate emotionally first, caught up in things excited scared Caught up in things --> not a good time to make decisions

8 FREEZE !

9 Need to Pause “What am I thinking?” “How am I feeling emotionally?” “What am I actually doing?”

10 Reflection Need to reflect on the “big picture” Need to reflect on the long term as it relates to my circumstances Need to reflect on my personal values Need to reflect on moral principles that apply to all Integrity, responsibility, compassion, forgiveness Need to reflect on the competencies that matter most MY Moral and Emotional Competencies

11 Reflect Factors that are going to help me make a good decision in all situations.

12 Reframing Reframe ‘self-talk’ to account for biases Confirming Data Overconfidence Reframe ‘self talk’ to avoid a reflexive response to highly charged emotions Reframe ‘self talk’ to be constructive
