1 TRANSFORM DESKTOP VIRTUALIZATION WITH EMC
Let’s discuss how you can transform your desktop environments with EMC solutions.

2 Consumer Needs Are Changing
Access From Anywhere Apps On The Go Devices Any Device They Want The way we work today is very different from the past. Today’s agile workforce demands that their work environments are accessible at anytime, from anywhere, and on any device... and without a degradation in performance.

3 Business Needs Are Changing
Windows 7/8 Migration Business Process Outsourcing Remote Office/Branch Office Mobile Users Bring Your Own Device Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery Business needs are also changing. Listed are some of the emerging challenges that companies face. Many of the challenges result in the same problems such as: Keeping cost low Securing sensitive data Supporting mobile devices. Let’s talk in depth about Windows Migration because this is something that most companies will have dealt with or will have to deal with in the near future. Windows 7 and 8 are here. Some of the biggest issues with Windows migration include: Reducing migration costs. It can be expensive to update each end point devices separately. Extending life of existing desktops. Application get more and more powerful and it can be expensive replacing end point devices that aren’t keeping up with the software Minimizing application incompatibilities. When you migrate OS, the applications may not be compatible leading to inconvenience and downtime. ========================= Other topics that you may want to touch upon. **Describing each section might take too long. Pick 2 – 3 that you’re comfortable with.** Business Process Outsourcing AND Remote Office / Branch Office Reduce costs. Running remote offices can be expensive. Centrally control sensitive data. It can be difficult to limit where sensitive data resides. Streamline desktop and application deployment. Updating each end point device separately can be cumbersome. Mobile Users AND Contractors/BYOD Deploy and manage a desktop image on employee owned assets. Who should have what? How do you prevent mixing personal and work data. Separation between corporate and personal desktop. Who should have what? How do you prevent mixing personal and work data. Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery Support end-users working from remote locations. Do you need a second IT team at each remote location? This can get expensive. Ensure desktops are available 24/7. How do you provide support for so many different desktops and devices 24/7? Quickly provision new desktops. How do you rapidly get a new device up and running?

4 VDI Architecture Challenges
User Experience is the most important metric Storage is often the enemy of performance Old-school remedies are inefficient Spinning hard drives can’t go any faster Several elements to VDI storage If the users don’t like the experience they will revolt Integrated and transparent chargeback What are some good reasons to use VDI… Virtual desktops, unlike virtual servers are NOT cheaper. When you factor all of the costs including infrastructure and operations, as well as the endpoints, it’s just not going to be cheaper. Users are accustomed to dedicated local drives VDI places users into a shared container Waste of money to keep adding spindles just to get more IOPS Faster storage arrays are costly and still have limits The 15K drive is as good as it gets Physics get in the way and the drives self-destruct Not all of the storage in VDI is performance bound What about the user data?

5 Opportunities For Your Business
Transform Desktop Virtualization Improve End-User Experience and Productivity Reduce Operational Costs Improve Data Protection Increase Agility & Flexibility Go Virtual Any User. Any Device. Anywhere. Desktop Virtualization may be the answer! With Desktop Virtualization Solutions you can: Improve End-User Experience and Productivity Reduce IT Costs Improve Data Protection Increase Agility & Flexibility

6 Why EMC For Desktop Virtualization
Cost-Effective Performance Backup And Recovery Simplified Management How does EMC offer value in terms of Desktop Virtualization? Most people would think of Desktop Virtualization and think of VMware Horizon View or Citrix XenDesktop. Although those are the big VDI clients that enable Desktop Virtualization to work… there is much more involved to get your environment up and running than just a software client. EMC Solutions for Desktop Virtualization provide anytime, anywhere access for users on any device, and lets you maintain IT control. EMC delivers an incredible IT and end user experience for virtual desktops by providing: Cost-effective performance Backup and recovery Simplified management Enhanced Security Enhanced Security

7 Flash Dramatically Improves Performance
PCIe FLASH 5000X Better Performance FLASH SSD 300X Better Performance 75X Higher Cost Capacity Cost VDI is one of the most performance-intensive workloads.  To meet these high performance demands, Flash is the answer.  Flash reduces latency and increases IOPs, which is exactly what is needed to have the incredible user experience for VDI.  With Flash, we saw a step function improvement in performance in solid state drives and in PCIe attached drives. It’s massively faster. But there’s a price to pay: the cost is higher. 50X Higher Cost 15K RPM HDD HIGH CAPACITY HDD Transaction Performance

8 EMC’s Flash Portfolio Storage Server HYBRID ARRAY Capacity Cost
ALL Flash ARRAY Flash CARD Flash APPLIANCE XtremSW Suite XtremIO Server XtremSF Storage VNX-F HYBRID ARRAY Capacity Cost Isilon VNX VMAX The first place we put Flash was in our traditional enterprise arrays making them hybrid arrays. Our secret sauce is FAST, Fully Automated Storage Tiering FAST is smart about layout of data on drives. It understands where hot data is, promotes that into Flash, cold data goes down to high capacity hard drives to be managed inexpensively. Our goal was to try to drive the percentage of flash in an array down to roughly 5%. We’ve seen many cases, where you can get closer to 50% of the IOPS served from even 1% of Flash. A relatively new technology in the marketplace delivers even greater performance. Now, server-based PCIe Flash technology is accelerating I/O performance by even another order of magnitude over Flash drives. At 2,000 I/O s per second (IOPS) per gigabyte, PCIe Flash can run 4,000 times faster than hard drives. EMC XtremSW Cache and XtremSF are examples of this technology. For workloads that need consistent performance, have data sets too large for PCIe and exhibit random I/O patterns, EMC has announced the XtremIO all flash array. Note to Presenter (competitive differentiation): No other storage (or server) vendor has the total solution provided by VNX Flash 1st design combined with server-based PCI flash and a single flash software solution for virtual and physical server environments. Until today, one of the major challenges facing users in virtual environments was a management complexity gap. Storage administrators have access to detailed information on the array, but lack visibility into how the virtual server is configured and which virtual machines are consuming what for storage resources. VMware administrators, on the other hand, can see the details of the virtual server environment and virtual machines, but lack visibility into the storage system. On the VNX series, Unisphere, together with vCenter Server and VASA (VMware vStorage APIs for Storage Awareness) integration, makes storage management in a virtualized environment a seamless experience. Each administrator can use their familiar interface to gain full visibility into virtual and physical resources, transparently provision storage, integrate replication, and access and offload all storage functions to the storage system. To further drive efficiency in the VMware space, EMC has delivered on the VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) for both SAN and NAS connections, allowing the VNX series to be fully optimized for virtualized environments. This technology offloads VMware storage-related functions from the server to the storage system, enabling more efficient use of server and network resources for increased performance and consolidation. Letting the VNX series perform common data management tasks, like vMotion, results in more network I/O, more virtual machines, and faster response time. The VNX series delivers unmatched VMware management integration and optimization and is ideal if you are running VMware.
