2.8 Food as a resource IB Geography Core

Definitions: Hunger: Discomfort or painful sensation caused by lack of food "A condition resulting from chronic under- consumption of food and/or nutritious food products." It may be precipitated by an inability to obtain sufficient quantities of food to eat or a failure to consume adequate quantities of nutritious food products, regardless of the ability to obtain sufficient food supplies.

The shortfall in the quality and/or quantity of food intake and can ultimately lead to death. The daily intake of calories to sustain a person above the minimum level averages 2,200 calories a day. DES (Dietary energy supply) is the number of calories per capita i.e. per person. It is most common in ELDC’s but occurs among many elderly people in EMDC’s It is a disease It is a secondary disease (it is related and accompanies other diseases) Malnutrition (wrong nutrition) (Two Types) : Undernutrition: Results from an unbalanced diet and a lack of particular nutrients

Overnutrition (i.e. overweight and obesity). More common in MEDCs. Occurs when a person’s diet contains more energy than the activity they use.

Globally, about 850 million people are malnourished. The worst areas are Africa and South Asia whereas east Asia has had the most success in reducing hunger over the last 30 years. Forms of Malnutrition: Use page 43 of Development and Underdevelopment to take notes on the following: Kwashiokor, Marasmus and Pellagra.

Use pages 43 & 44 of development and Underdevelopment. Explain why some countries have higher rates of malnutrition (Think about factors affecting malnutrition).
