Whitehall Football Offensive Philosophy
2
Offensive Emphasis: 1. Strong Inside Running Game 2. Few Plays/Variety of Formations 3. Attack Entire Field “…take what the defense gives us.”
3
The Spread Offense: Basic Concepts What is a “spread” offense? Formation with 3-4 players “spread out” away from the tackle box area QB either under center, or in the shotgun
4
Why the Spread? Puts ball in hands of athletes in space Minimal looks for OL and QB Creates simpler looks in running game Recruiting: easier to get smaller, athletic kids as opposed to big, strong kids Decision-making: in hands of players Fatigues defense FUN!!!
5
Explosive Opportunities in Running Game
6
Necessary Components Attitude: Must be aggressive and physical Must force defense to “cover-down” Force defense to defend entire field Multiplicity. Defense must see many looks Tempo. We must control it Must have plan to defeat the blitz
7
Defense leaving receiver uncovered. Must either throw “uncovered” or the Bubble Screen, otherwise they can overload us with 7 in the box.
8
All receivers “covered down”, and FS in deep middle. 6 in the box means we can run or throw.
9
All receivers “covered down”, and 2 safeties playing deep halves. Only 5 in the box, meaning we should run the ball. All receivers “covered down”, and 2 safeties playing deep halves. Only 5 in the box, meaning we should run the ball.
10
No FS in deep middle, indicating blitz. We only have 6 to block 7, meaning QB must check the protection or check to a blitz-beater and throw quick. No FS in deep middle, indicating blitz. We only have 6 to block 7, meaning QB must check the protection or check to a blitz-beater and throw quick.
11
Shotgun Offense Same runs and passes as last year. Allows us more “option” opportunities with athletic QB
13
No-Huddle Offense Allows us to dictate tempo – –Storm, Thunder, Lightning Forces “vanilla” defense Defense reacting to us, rather than vice-versa Fatigues defense, especially those with two-way players Eliminates need to condition at practice
14
10 min. of conditioning x 4 days (M, T, W, TH) = 40 minutes of conditioning per week 5 plays per minute x 40 minutes = 200 reps per week 200 reps per week x 10 weeks = 2000 additional reps per season!! OR
