UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE & VETERINARY SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS AND GAMES REPORT ON SPORTEVENTS AND ACTIVITIES DONE AT THE COLLEGE FINANCIAL YEAR 2014/2015 Sports at the college are offered for both recreational and competition to enable the Students and staff to participate in sports. To achieve this college has a well maintained excellent Sports complex, equipment and facilities. The college appreciates and values the importance of Sports and recreation; hence it has made Sports and recreation an integral part of the college activities. Below are highlight of some of the major events participated by our college teams. College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences Fun Day 2015 Prof. Mwang'ombe's principal CAVS with her Staff and Students during the college fun day at the College sports complex CAVS fun and Sports day was held on 28 th November 2014. The event created an opportunity for both the Students and staff to play various sports,play fun games in our excellent Sports complex, have fun and socialize. The event also created awareness on the importance of fitness among our staff and students, as a preventive medicine and management of most lack of fitness related health problems. After the successful fun daythe students and staff were treated to a grand luncheon where three bulls were slaughtered at the Tana kitchen to crown to event. CAVS men football team wins the Universities and Colleges football league (UCFL)2014 CAVS men football team celebrate after winning the Universities and Colleges Football League (UCFL) The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences men football team was among the top teamsin the Universities and Colleges Football League (UCFL) that ended in December 2014. CAVSfootball men team made history by being in the first position on the league table for the first time after joining the league. The teams’ participation in the UCF league has provided our team and their colleague student’s football funs an opportunity to spend their weekend leisure time in a positive and healthy manner. The league has also tremendously reduced alcohol consumptions and use of drugs among the students. Because of its intensity it has helped the students to discover and develop their talents in football. CAVS men’s football teamwin the University of Nairobi football league 2015 CAVS men’s football team during the University of Nairobi Football League The University of Nairobi Football League that began in January 2015 came to an end last Saturday at School of Business. CAVS men’s football team successfully emerged the overall winner in the league and was declared the best Collegemen’s football team atUniversity of Nairobi. CAVS men’sfootball team used the external league experience to win the top position in the University of Nairobi Football League ahead of CEES and Faculty of Arts men’s football teams. This was a big achievement for the CAVS men’s football team.The participating students were delighted with the success and competitiveness of the league saying they are looking forward to a bigger UON footballleague to give the teams more interaction and exposure in the future. 4.Prof. Mwang'ombe's2015 Bull Match at the College Sports Complex The acting Principal CAVS ProfMulei presents a trophy and certificates to the wining students. This year's Prof. Mwang'ombe's Bull Match was played on Friday 27 th February 2015 at the College's sports complex. The annual event which is her own initiativeinvolves football teams drawn from the two college faculties; Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. This year the Faculty of Agriculture football team emerged as theoverall winner. The College acting PrincipalCAVS Prof Mulei thanked the students for the team spirit and discipline they exhibited throughout the tournament. She encouraged the students to have the same spirit in their other college activities and in their studies.The students were thereafter were treated to a dinner where two bull provided by the principalwere slaughtered. 5. College annual external sports fixture and retreat to Mombasa February 2015 CAVS Men football team playing a friendly soccer match against the UON Mombasa campus. CAVS students’ sports team had a fascinating retreat in Mombasa. Being a sports team, they got an opportunity to participate in a friendly soccer match against the UON Mombasa campus. CAVS football team won the match. Students were grateful for the exceptional opportunity offered to them by the College. The retreat comprised an array of sporting and pleasurable activities such as; beach soccer, volleyball, swimming, windsurfing, dancing, adventure tours, coconut shot puts and boating. Co-curricular activities are part of the College’s core values. CAVS always treasures sports and retreats, as programs and learning experiences, to complement the regular learning activities. 6. CAVS teams participation in inter-campuses and other sports tournaments Cavs ladies netball team playing a game Our college teams this year have participatedin the various Inter- campuses events held throughout the year and in various external tournaments namely Tim Wanyonyi football league, Extreme football tournament and several friendly matches. All the teams’ performance has been excellent and they have worn most matches played in the various Sports disciplines. 7. Kenya University Sports Association Women Annual Sports Championship CAVS ladies football team during a match at CAVS CAVS ladies football team and other teams participated in the Kenya University Sports Association Women Annual Sports Championship held in March 2015 at African Nazarene University and the teams did extremely very well. The event was the fourth edition of the KUSA National Women Championship and was meant to motivate our female students to be more active in sports. Self- motivatvion is key to success of everything thus encouraging students to embrace sports is imperative. University of Nairobi women team emerged second overall. Kenyatta University retained top position. 8.Outreach Activity at Mully‘s Children Family CAVS staff and students visit the less fortunate children at Mully Children's Family at Matuu. The students and staff from the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences visited Mully’s children family. During the visit, students donated foodstuffs and clothes. They also socialized with the children through fun games. At the mentorship session, the children were encouraged to work hard in class so as to join University of Nairobi. Mully Children’s Family (MCF), located at Matuu, has two homes at Ndalani and Yatta. The home has over 1000 children, newborn to youth, from less fortunate backgrounds including HIV/AIDS orphans abandoned by their parents and victims of sexual and domestic violence. The family also supports the local communities within Ndalani and Yatta. Matuu is an extremely dry area, yet the children’s home is 55% self-sustaining through modern technology Agriculture; an insight that through embracing modern technology agriculture, our nation can feed its entire population regardless of inhospitable climate. CAVS ANTI-DRUG ABUSE AND ALCOHOL TOURNAMENT Cavs Football teamplaying a match during the anti-drug substance abuse and alcohol tournament held at CAVS Kabete Campus Student Organization (KCUSO) held an anti- drug substance abuse and alcohol tournament to create awareness and pass the message on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse to the youth on 21 st February 2015 at University of Nairobi, Upper Kabete Campus Sports complex. The youth in the Universities, colleges and community around the CAVS are the main victims of these drugs and substances abuse. The theme of the event was “VIJANA TULENGE MIHADARATI, TUJENGE NCHI YETU”. The teams that participated in the tournament included CAVS Football team;,Kabete stars FC, Uthiru FC, Visions FC, Kabete United FC, Green Eagles FC, Buffalo FC, Red carpet FC, Patriots FC, Vision Sportiff FC, Patriots FC, Wailers FC, Kibarage FC, White Eagles FC Aamong others. Cavs Football team topped their pool to qualify for the quarter finals with the wailers’ fc and proceeded to the semi-finals against kabete stars. They won the match to book a place to the finals against vision sportiff.Cavs football team won the top position was crowned as the winners of the Anti-Drug Abuse and Alcohol Tournament. The College thanks Prof. Mwang'ombe, the principalCAVS, for her great love and support for Sports at the college.
