Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies Determinants Risk Factors increase the likelihood of substance use and it’s consequences –Risk Factors in RMI? Protective Factors reduce the potential for substance use and it’s consequences –Protective Factors in RMI? 10

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies General Epi Concepts: Morbidity vs. Mortality Morbidity refers to disease, illness, or disability Mortality refers to death 11

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies General Epi Concepts: Incidence vs. Prevalence Prevalence quantifies number of existing cases in a population at a point or during a period of time. Incidence quantifies the number of new cases that develop in a population at risk during a specified time period. 12

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies Incidence Prevalence

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies Epi Profile Focus Consumption – Use and high-risk use of alcohol, tobacco, and/or drugs Consequences – Adverse social, health, and safety consequences associated with alcohol, tobacco, and drug use Risk and Protective Factors – Factors that increase or decrease the potential for substance use and it’s consequences 14

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies You have an epi profile…now what? What data do you have? What data are missing? What resources are available in your communities? What’s missing? What services already exist? Where are their gaps in services? 15

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies You have an epi profile…now what? How knowledgeable are the communities about substance use-related problems? How ready are your communities for implementing prevention interventions? Are you ready to prioritize your substance use issues and populations? 16
