1 Consequences of Rural to Urban Migration – Urban Poverty. By the end of today’s lesson I will be able to: Describe general characteristics of a shanty town. Explain the problems (and a possible solution) of urban poverty in a case study of São Paulo. Shanty towns, squatter settlements, slum areas – a collection of shacks and poor quality housing which often lack electricity, water supply or sewage disposal. People live in shanty towns because they have no choice. Favela – The name given to shanty towns in Brazil. Local authority – local government, they try to ‘manage’ the city. Self-help Schemes – Where local authorities or charities support shanty town dwellers to produce higher quality homes by providing land, small loans, cheap building materials and basic services. DELETE THIS Note for teachers: If pupils get the answer wrong they will be sent to beginning unless they click on the red tick, this should send them to the question they got wrong Any feed back: mrowley@wordsley.du dley.gov.uk
