Empire of Charles V In the 1500s, wealth from the Americas made Spain the richest empire in Europe. Arts & literature were at their height. But, this surplus wealth eventually led to the decline of the empire. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wggerman/map/images/charlesvempire.jpg

Charles V Charles the grandson of Ferdinand & Isabella and ruled an empire that was vast. He wore two crowns. He was the heir to the Spanish crown and that of the Austrian Hapsburgs (Holy Roman Empire) http://cache.eb.com/eb/image?id=97228&rendTypeId=4

Constant Warfare Ruling both empires meant Charles was constantly at war. As you know, war costs money. He was at war with France for claims the Hapsburgs had in Italy. He fought against Protestant movements in the German states (he had to allow some of the princes to be Protestant) His greatest foe was the Ottoman Empire. If it wasn’t for Poland, the Ottomans would have captured Vienna. http://ron.heavengames.com/cpix/gameinfo/nations/spain/charlesV.jpg

Poland 1683 King Jan Sobieski broke the Ottoman siege of Vienna. This stopped the Ottoman Empire from conquering Eastern & Central Europe. http://www.pages.drexel.edu/undergrad/ds22/rakoczi

King Philip II He reigned from 1556- 1598 He spent much of his time working & led a Spartan life style. He ruled as an absolute monarch & believed in divine right. He saw himself as guardian of the Catholic Church & enforced religious unity. http://www.nps.gov/casa/historyculture/images/philipII_1.jpg

Wars of King Phillip II Lepanto 1571 – Spain & Italian allies defeated an Ottoman fleet. Netherlands (1560s-1581) – Protestant provinces in the richest part of the empire revolted along religious lines, against high taxes, and autocratic Spanish rule. England 1588 – Spanish Armada sail on England.

The Spanish Armada By the 1580s, Philip viewed the Protestant Queen of England, Elizabeth I, as his primary foe. She had supported the Dutch against the Spanish. She supported Sea Dogs (Privateers) to plunder Spanish treasure ships. To end the English attacks Phillip assembled a huge fleet to sail on England. http://www.dover-kent.co.uk/people/images/pic_elizabeth_i_armada.jpg

The Spanish Armada In 1588, 130 ships with 20,000 men and 2,400 pieces of artillery set sail for England. Weird weather made the superior Spanish ships vulnerable to the lighter faster English ships. Then, a savage storm blew up scattering the Armada & ended the planned invasion. The Spanish were soon replaced by Dutch, English, and French fleets. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/2c/Routes_armada.gif/270px-Routes_armada.gif

The Golden Century Philip was a huge patron of the arts. El Greco “the Greek” – the Painter Miguel de Cervantes – he wrote Don Quixote. http://www.vangelismovements.com/ElGrecoFrontB.jpg
