4. ACCOMPLISHMENTS In the year 1972, Oprah Winfrey won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant and started working with a local black radio station WVOL as a news presenter. In the year 1973 Oprah graduated from Tennessee State University with a degree in Speech and Performing Arts and became the first black TV news anchor with WTVF- TV. In 1983, Oprah moved to Chicago to host WLS-TV's low- rated half-hour morning talk-show, AM Chicago and within months after Oprah took over, the show went on to become the highest rated talk show in Chicago and was renamed as "The Oprah Winfrey Show".

Born as a poor, and out of wedlock child, Oprah already had the odds stacked against her. Raped at the age of nine and sexually harassed by family members for the next four years, Oprah turned to a life of rebellion and drugs. It was not until she went to live with her father, who imposed strict discipline on the young Oprah and encouraged her education that she began to turn her life around. After a troubled adolescence in a small farming community, where she was sexually abused by a number of male relatives and friends of her mother, Vernita, she moved to Nashville to live with her father, Vernon, a barber and businessman. She entered Tennessee State University in 1971 and began working in radio and television broadcasting in Nashville.
