1 ELEMENTS OF ARTS COLOR SCHEMES Instructor: Mrs. Martin

2 COLOR SCHEME Now that you know about colors, let’s talk about color relationships, or COLOR SCHEMES

3 MONOCHROMATIC: Uses different shades in the same color.

4 COMPLEMENTARY: Opposite colors on the color wheel, such as:  Red & Green  Blue & Orange  Yellow & Violet

5 SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY: A color and the two colors located on either side of its complement.

6 SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY:

7 DOUBLE COMPLEMENTARY: The richest of all schemes because it uses 4 colors arranged in 2 complementary color pairs, but the hardest scheme to balance.

8 PRIMARY TRIADIC: Any combination of the primary color: red, yellow, and blue; and their tints and shades.

9 SECONDARY TRIADIC: Any combination of the secondary colors: violet, orange, and green; and their tints and shades.

10 TERTIARY TRIADIC: Sets of 3 tertiary colors that are equidistant from each other on the color wheel.

11 ANALOGOUS: Uses 3 or more colors that are right next to each other on the color wheel.

12 ACHROMATIC: Combination of black, white, and gray hues, tints, and shades.

13 CHROMATIC GRAY: Made from a mixture of colors such as: Purple-gray and Blue-gray

14 EARTH TONES: Are made literally from pigments found in the soil.

15 ACTIVITY: Complete your Color Scheme Worksheet by coloring the boxes with their coordinating color scheme.
