1 Matthew Chapter 5 >>>>>>>>>>>> Click for Summary of last time…

2 Summary of Last time: Remember, last time, we finished off the “Beatitudes” and then read verses and we finished with verse 16… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to review verses

3 You are the salt of the earth;
Matthew 5:13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. NASU Salt was a preservative – they had no refrigeration, so salt was very important to keep foods (specifically meats) from spoiling... We as carriers of salt, are to be God’s preservative in our world We are to keep the world from being “spoiled” by satan Salt was used to flavor things… We as the carriers of salt are to flavor the world and add God’s influence on the world }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

4 You are the salt of the earth;
Matthew 5:13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. NASU God left us (Christians) to influence the world (remember, satan is the god of this world and rules it, and the world is corrupt because of him) and so we are to counter his influence by influencing the world for Christ Again, if we as believers allow the Holy Spirit to take control of our lives and allow His fruit to come through our lives, we will be the salt of the earth! >>>>>>>>> Click for next...

5 Matthew 5:14-16 14 "You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. NASU Again, I think we are just carriers or messengers of the true light - God And if we allow the fruit of the Spirit to come through our lives, we will let God’s light shine Light is the opposite of darkness, the world is full of darkness (remember the prophecy; “the people sitting in darkness, and upon the land a light has dawned”?) Satan is the king of darkness – God is the one who brought light into the world – “In the beginning... light” we are to be agents of light, we are to be agents of God’s holiness, we are to bring God’s holiness (light) into the world }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

6 Matthew 5:14-16 14 "You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. NASU And we are to let our light shine before men: That is not with just our mouth, but with our actions You can SAY all you want, but people watch your actions And we should let it shine in such a way that they will not see us, but will SEE GOD! And it will bring glory and honor to Him! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

7 So, remember… Jesus said; “YOU are the salt of the earth”… And… “YOU are the light of the world” Where else is the world going to get Salt and Light? !!!!! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

8 I’M A SINNER! I’M NOT PERFECT! God, the source of perfect Salt and source of perfect Light, has left us to be the ones who are to bring salt and light to the world! And let me say, I don’t always do such a good job of it! It’s VERY humbling! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

9 But, don’t forget, God has not left us alone!
We, as followers of Jesus Christ, have the Holy Spirit living in us, and by His power, and ONLY by His power, we CAN BE SALT AND LIGHT! We just need to get our flesh out of the way of the Holy Spirit and let Him do it! >>>>>>>>> Click for NEW...

10 Matthew 5:17 & 18 17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 11 Romans 7:7-13 7 What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, "YOU SHALL NOT COVET." 8 But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart READ VERSES }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

12 from the Law sin is dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; 10 and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me; 11 for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So then, the Law is holy, and the }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

commandment is holy and righteous and good. 13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful. NASU Paul is telling us here, that if it weren’t for the Law, I wouldn’t realize I was sinning I wouldn’t realize I was offending God! In fact the Law shows us God’s character and His PERFECT nature! The Law shows us God! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next verse...

14 Galatians 3:24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. NASU READ VERSE Paul points out that the Law was given to show our need for a Savior If it weren’t for the OT Law, I would never come to Christ! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

16 Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us — for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE" NASU READ VERSE And Jesus is able to redeem us from the curse of the law! He didn’t come to do away with the Law, because the Law is the very nature of God He came to FULFILL the Law! >>>>>>>>> Click for next...

17 Matthew 5:20 For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. NASU ******* Note: This verse really goes with what Jesus has just been saying, AND is leading into what He is getting ready to say So, if your Bible has a title heading for the next section, like mine does and the heading comes just after this verse - don’t let that make you think it only goes with what He has just said So let’s go back and read this verse in the context of what Jesus just said... }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for verses...

NASU Jesus has just said: He didn’t come to abolish the Law and the prophets, He came to fulfill ALL of them! And until Heaven and earth pass away, the ALL the Law will stand And if anyone voids one of the tiniest parts of the Law, and teaches others to do the same, they are least in the kingdom of heaven But, whoever keeps them and teaches others to do so as well, will be called great in the kingdom of heaven Then He says… (READ VERSE 20 AGAIN) }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

21 Isaiah 64:6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. NASU READ VERSES There is no one who is righteous, not even one! All are sinners! No one is perfect EXCEPT GOD! In fact, He concludes Chapter 5 by saying you are to be PERFECT as your heavenly father is PERFECT! You are not compared with other men, but you are going to be compared to God to enter the Kingdom of Heaven! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to go back to Matthew 5:20...

NASU So when He said to the crowds their righteousness must surpass the righteousness of the Pharisees to enter the kingdom of heaven… It should have caused them to say; “Who then can be saved?” !!! And that was His very intention… Their thinking was all wrong as far as their belonging to the kingdom of heaven They were relying on their own righteousness And as Isaiah said, their own righteousness was only as good as a stinking, rotting, filthy garment! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

24 Verses 21-48 Chapter 5 READ Chapter 5:21-48

25 Verses 21-48 Now, remember this follows what He just said in verse 20…
20 "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you WILL NOT enter the kingdom of heaven. And so here He is beginning to “flesh it out” And remember, how the Jews were thinking they were righteous So, in this section He is pointing out What the Law says, and then what the heart of God is like… God’s heart is PERFECT! He would never even think anything unrighteous }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

26 Verses 21-48 So, He is showing how it is more than murdering, or a
physical sexual act, or whatever, it is what’s in the heart that matters to God And if any of His listeners heard what He said, and were honest with themselves… They should have been thinking: “Then who can be saved?” And I think that’s exactly what He was getting at They needed to realize God is PERCFECT and the only way to be with Him is to be PERFECT! And “no flesh” will be saved on it’s own! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

27 Verses 21-48 And I think He was addressing a human tendency that
wants to find the line and get as close to it as possible without going over it… People tend to want to have sin very precisely defined so they can get close to it without actually doing it. So for example, they can “flirt” without actually committing adultery , etc. And I think He is also addressing that in this section too But as that was His main point here, we need to keep in mind He was revealing God’s heart here, and if we are children of God, we should be striving to please Him! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

28 Verses 21-48 !!!!!! Note: There’s no way anyone can earn favor with God by the things they do! Remember how Isaiah 64:6 says; “...all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment”? But again, as I think about the immeasurable debt I owed, (remember parable of man who owed 10,000 talents?) and have been forgiven of, it should cause me to desire to please the one who forgave me! I want to do all I can to honor Him! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

29 Verses 21-48 And remember, as a Christian, the fruit of the Spirit should be evident in our lives And the Holy Spirit would do the things Jesus is teaching here in this section And so, I think there are some important things we can learn from what Jesus is teaching here… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

30 Matthew 5:21 & 22 You have heard that the ancients were
told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' 22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. NASU READ VERSES Now does anyone have a footnote next to: ‘You good for nothing’ ? Greek: Rhaka Guess how many times the Greek word Rhaka is found in the scriptures? ONCE! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

31 Matthew 5:21 & 22 You have heard that the ancients were
told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' 22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. NASU It is probably a transliteration of the OT word: reyq (rake) And if you look at all the verses in the OT where this word is used it often spaeaks of something that is absolutely empty… “Empty handed” “the pit was empty” (Joseph and his brothers) “ empty pitchers” (Gideon) etc. So, do you get the idea of this word? So, what Jesus is referring to here is a very harsh word Maybe they didn’t mean it as bad when they said it, but behind it is a very harsh term… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

32 Matthew 5:21 & 22 You have heard that the ancients were
told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' 22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. NASU Probably equal to how some of the whites in this country felt about African Americans during the time of slavery Some of the whites didn’t even think of the African Americans as human beings Now, Jesus is talking about a name one may call a fellow countryman Maybe in a heated argument or something Maybe they didn’t really mean it in that way… But you know what? It offends God as if it were meant in the worst way! Every person is created in the image of God! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

NASU And to say something like; “You idiot!” or something like that - offends God! ... ...It’s as bad as murder! And that is precisely what Jesus is pointing out here… God created all people in His image! God loves all people with Agape (perfect) love! God would never think or say something like “You idiot!” Sin is anything less than God’s perfect nature! And sin will send you to hell! And here He is beginning to show how hopeless we all are without a Savior! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...
