Acid & Base Nomenclature Almost there!

How to recognize a compound/formula as being an acid or base:  Acid: has H, hydrogen, at the beginning. - Can be H and one other element - Binary Acid - Can be H and a polyatomic ion - Ternary Acid  Base: contains OH, hydroxide. - Metal and the hydroxide ion

Binary Acids  Hydro + second element (Change ending to –ic) + acid  HCl  HF  Your turn!

Ternary Acids  If the polyatomic ion ends with –ate  No prefix and change –ate ending to –ic + acid.  HNO 3

Ternary Acids  If the polyatomic ion ends with –ite  No prefix and change –ite ending to –ous  HNO

Acid Formulas  Treated like ionic compounds (more on this later!)  Get the charges  H = +1  Then swap & drop!
