2 WHAT IS THE BUREAUCRACY The federal bureaucracy is the administrative structure that handles the day to day business of the government It has grown enormously over the past 200 years (1789 50 employees, 2000 2.8 million employees) Why has it grown so much???

3 WHAT DOES THE BUREAUCRACY DO? The federal bureaucracy does everything the government does They help to protect the environment (EPA) They help to collect revenue (IRS) They regulate the economy (FTC) The monitor the airways (FCC) Any other agencies we can think of?

4 HOW IS THE BUREAUCRACY SET UP The bureaucracy is a hierarchical organization (people at the top have power and delegate) Each bureaucrat has his or her own job in the bureaucracy With what the government does it would be impossible to do without a lot of help

5 ORGANIZATION OF THE BUREAUCRACY There are 15 cabinet departments (agriculture- veteran affairs) Independent executive agencies-these agencies report directly to the President (CIA,EPA) Independent regulatory agencies (SEC, FCC) Government organizations/corporations (Post office, FDIC)
