Green Cities

What is a “Green City”? In 2010, the EU decided to reward the cities more commited to the Enviroment in Europe, they were called “ Green Cities ”. The first choice was Stockholm. After, Hamburg and Vitoria-Gasteiz will follow it.

Why Stockholm? Hammarby Sjöstad is the answer. It is a neighborhood in the south of Stockholm, that presents a new and ecológical lifestyle, been a great nature neighbor.

Hammarby Sjöstad Hammarby was created, among other things, to improve the quality of living in Stockholm. That was done through water purification, noise reduction, a waste reusation, diferents ways of public transport (boat, tram, bus and underground against traffic congestion and more natural areas.

How does Hammarby works? In this neighborhood nothing is thrown away. The water, the waste, the electricity…They are recycled through contant circuits, without harming the enviroment at all.

Power circuit We must know that the houses receive energy from renewable sources(solar, wind and tidal), in addition to the one provided by the plants which will be discussed bellow: A. Heat and power plant: It gets biofuel from field and the one that has already been in used from the houses. In it, they are renewed and get off in heat and electrecity way to the houses.

B. Heat plant: It gets wastewater that has already been purificated, from the sewage. This one come to the houses like cold and warm water. C. Sewage: With the wastematerials that were collectedon in the wastewater, they made biogas, to use it in public transport and domestic

Water circuit The houses receive drinking water from Mälaren Lake. One used, this water is conveyed to the treatment plant, in addition to the processes explained in the power circuit, this one produces biosolids that arrive to the biofuel’s field The street storm water is collected in channels, all over the neighborhood, that drive the water to the Hammarby Lake. There, it continues the water biological process (It’s evaporated, then is condensed and finally, i returned to the neighborhood as rain).
