ABSTRACT: Suicide is an enormous public health problem around the world. Each year approximately 1 million people worldwide die by suicide, making it one of the leading causes of death. International data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that suicide occurs in approximately 16.7 per 100,000 persons per year and accounts for the 14th-leading cause of death worldwide. Suicide has become much more common in children and adolescents than it used to be. Statistics from the USA indicate that suicide has become the third leading cause of death for teenagers 15-19. Recent World Health Organization data (Global School-based Student Health Survey 2010) indicates that 15.5 % of Emirati students age 13-15 seriously considered suicide as an option during the past 12 months; and about 13 % actually attempted suicide one or more times during the past year. Of adolescents who do commit suicide, 90% have at least one diagnosable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death. Most frequently it is major depression, substance abuse disorder, or conduct disorder. The seriousness and scope of suicide has led both the WHO and USA to call for an expansion of data collection on the prevalence of and risk factors for suicide, and redoubled efforts to train health-care providers on identifying early signs of suicide. The objective is to raise awareness and increase the ability of various professionals to provide urgent help, thereby taking all necessary steps to minimize the tragic but preventable cause of death. Addressing these calls, ACPN offers this program in an attempt to bring more awareness about suicidal behavior, to discuss the prevalence of suicide among children, adolescents and adults, and to outline comprehensive approaches in preventing suicide.
