Privacy Lost: How Technology is Endangering Your Privacy David H. Holtzman POWERPOINT BY: PETER OLSON

Overview of the book Published in 2006 Written by David H. Holtzman, a former security analyst, entrepreneur of multiple social technology businesses, and former overseer of the domain name system Holtzman’s book provides an overview of how advances in technology are eroding individual privacy, as well as exploring the balance between individual civil liberties and national security In addition to describing new threats to privacy, the book focuses on the inability of the law to protect individual privacy in the face of rapidly advancing technology

The Author’s Focuses Holtzman devotes multiple chapters to the nearly endless ways that technology invade your privacy He organizes his list into seven “sins” of privacy, which simplifies the possible dilemma of not knowing what technology can and can’t endanger your privacy Following his discussion of invasive tech, the laws introduced in an attempt to prevent privacy invasion are looked at He states that the law simply cannot keep up with technology Finally, Holtzman considers the ways in which privacy invasion can be combatted, and the vitality of creating a balance between the ability of technology and protection of privacy is stressed

How the book applies to class This book relates to our class by discussing the many ways that privacy can be endangered due to technology Holtzman’s “sins” directly relate to topics we discussed in class Daniel Lee and his loss of credibility and dignity

Who would I recommend the book too? Because of the book’s broad yet comprehensive structure, I would recommend it to anyone with a small prior knowledge of technology and the possible ways that technology can be invaded. Holtzman’s conversational writing style makes the book easier to read which allows it to appeal to a bigger range of ages
