Domestic Violence Definition “ Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. This can encompass, but is not limited to, the following types of abuse: psychological physical sexual financial Emotional (Home Office, March 2013)

The true cost of domestic abuse… More than 1 in 4 women and around 1 in 6 men have experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16. (Home Office, ‘Homicide, Firearm Offences & Intimate Violence 2008/09’, January 2010) Women are more likely than men to experience longer periods of partner abuse, repeat victimisation and injury or emotional effects as a result of the abuse. ( Home Office, ‘Homicide, Firearm Offences & Intimate Violence 2008/09’, January 2010) On average 2 women per week are killed in England & Wales by their partners or ex- partners (Crime in England and Wales 2006/07 Report)

Domestic Abuse in Surrey In the 51 weeks to 25th March 2013 Surrey Police received 12,567 reports of a domestic incidents or crimes. That is 246 reports every week. (Surrey Police, 2013) In 2012-2013 the specialist domestic abuse outreach services in Surrey dealt 3,127 new service users.

Surrey Statistics Since 2000 there have been 58 known attempted or actual DA related killings in Surrey Number of murders: 26 Number of attempted murders: 29 Number of manslaughters: 3 (Surrey Police, April’13)

How does Outreach engage with clients?

13 Surrey DA Services Outreach provides client centred support: Face-to-face, phone, email or text. Specialist advice, advocacy, information and support. Crisis intervention and long term work delivered on a needs-led basis. Empowerment and recovery crucial to prevent repeat victimisation

Surrey DA Services cont…. Maximising safety and well-being e.g. Sanctuary Scheme and safety planning. Benefits, Children & child contact, Debt, Divorce & separation, Housing, Legal advice including Injunctions, criminal law. Referral and signposting to other agencies and much more!

Surrey Domestic Abuse Outreach services Meet clients at safe venue for face to face interview Confidential telephone advice and support Sanctuary Scheme Referral Freedom Programme and Support Groups Represent client at MARAC IDVA at SDVC Liaise with professionals and advocacy Train and raise awareness of domestic abuse

IDVA Independent Domestic Violence Advisors Surrey DA Services provide IDVA services for Surrey Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conferences (MARACs) Surrey Specialist Domestic Violence Court (SDVC)

Court IDVA SDVC sits once a week IDVA: Receives court list and contacts victim Attends all 1 st, admin & sentencing hearings Liaises with Crown Prosecution Service Immediate access to court results Enhances access to Special Measures, appropriate Bail Conditions, Restraining Orders In 2012/13 Surrey IDVAs supported 392 victims at the SDVC

MARAC IDVA Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conference Receives MARAC Agenda from Police Contacts every victim (if safe) prior to meeting Advocates for victims at MARAC Meetings Responsible for meeting actions Feedback to victims In 2012/13 Surrey IDVAs supported 591 victims through MARAC

Volunteering Services In 2011/12 Surrey DA Services Volunteers provided approximately 15,438 hours of support which equates to £247,008 of added value. Volunteers over the four services: Supporting 24 hr helpline Supporting survivors at Civil Court Supporting survivors at appointments/meetings 1 to 1 Befriending Supporting Group Work Programmes Awareness raising Fundraising activities.
