Lac Operon Operon: a unit of genetic function common in bacteria and phages, consisting of coordinately regulated clusters of genes with related functions. Lac Operon is an inducible operon. o It is normally off, but needs an inducer to turn it on. The inducer is allolactose: an isomer of lactose formed in small amounts from lactors that enters the cell. The inducer inactivates the repressor. The presence of lactose inactivates the repressor
